NEAFL- 2014

Would anyone know when the Team Lists have to be finilised also I noticed that each club has 35 players PLUS 12 U19 rookies. In relation to the rookies I gather they play in the QAFL but are the QAFL clubs obligated to play them in thier top grade ?

I think the lists are being finalised at the start of March with the mini draft to QAFL clubs not long after that.

Only about a month out from practice matches now so you'd think the squads would be starting to take shape. Really looking forward to this season the closer it gets I think the Aspley/Southport/Redland matches will all be beauties. Aspley still my tip to have the edge over the other two.

Just wanted to warn the guys from the North that 2 of our clubs play for the "**** of the North" trophy each time they play. When our 2 Northside Canberra clubs play (Ainslie and Belconnen) they play for the "**** of the North" trophy and opposition supporters mainly myself will refer to them as the "***** of the North".

Now just to clarify, I am not having a go at you Northerners in this competition as one member thought so last season while trolling the Eastern thread and after countless attempts to educate this person, they seemed pretty happy to continue a PM barrage, so I am getting in early to explain the situation before it raises its head during the season.

Thanks in advance.

ABH.

Thanks for the advice in advance - Game 1 at Aspley should be a cracker in this case - hopefully the last quarter will only go for around the usual 30 minutes and not the apparently near record 37 minutes like last time we played Belconnen - we Northerners, will refer to this game at Graham Road as the Clock of the North.

See The Thunder have recruited A. Davey ( Essendon), J.Brennan ( Suns),and Djerrkura (Bulldogs) from the AFL. Have got Willie Rioli back from Sth.Freo and also gained a guy by the name of Luke Harder from Port Adelaide (Sanfl), ...senior player at that level with a good reputation.
Also, a guy by the name of Sebestian Gilhaus from Central Districts and Shaq Mckenzie from East Perth.......both have played senior level in these comps.
Could The Thunder strike again !!!
Big challenge for Xavier Clarke in his first senior coaching role.!!!
Just heard the Thunder have signed delisted Suns flash in Liam Patrick. If they gain the players as mentioned above, and with a few more to come, they will be a force.

Few things.

Is Lachlan Weller going to play for Southport in 2014? I know he is on a special program at the Suns for pre-season training. Given he hasn't completed the 5 years required to be eligible as an academy pick for the Suns it doesn't really matter where he plays in 2014. I know the Scorpions (u18 QLD team) are playing 6 games in the TAC Cup in 2014 and I'd imagine Weller would definitely be involved.

Are the Thunder going to be strong in 2014? Seems like they have signed quite a few guys with serious talent. Are there still issues with some of the locals not fully embracing a winter comp?

Is a north QLD team going to enter the league in 2015? I'm sure the Suns would be in favour of that happening given it falls into their zone. Of course it will weaken the local leagues (Cairns mostly I would have thought) but it will give them exposure and increase chances of players from that area being drafted into the AFL.

Lastly, how many guys legitimately have a shot at getting drafted in 2014? I know Weller is a good chance but is there anyone else?

Weller will play 6-8 games for sharks when not on rep duty. He is the best qld prospect and may well be top 10. Liam Dawson was u18 all Australian last year as underage player. So he is likely. Have to wait and see on others to see who puts their hand up.

As for thunder they were the bottom placed nth conference team that are still in the neafl- so fair to say they needed to get a few. It's difficult for them do they try and give opportunities to kids from communities and lose or recruit big and win? I reckon they are on the fringe of the finals could sneak in or just miss.

As for nth qld team I reckon it's in the afl's plan so it may happen but it will cost plenty and they will be the whipping boys. The NEAFL will be high standard this year

Aspley already telling certain players who won't make final list the best thing for their football is to stay in their 'program' and play Div 2 for their lower div side. What a disgrace, that aspley try stockpile talent when no other NEAFL side has that option.

they have a 2nd division side for 6 years now. no one has cared about it before now. not the hornets fault that southport and redlands don't have more than 1 team.

they should be encouraging them to go to sandgate and grange as i am sure they will get many junior players out of those clubs, cant be one way traffic....

most of these players would be aspley juniors? why would they be encouraging them to leave a club that they have played at for over 15 years??

Talented players from lower level clubs who want to try their luck to play in an elite league, shouldn't be allowed to

I'm not talking bout aspley juniors. I'm talking about players from other clubs having a crack at NEAFL, and then being told the best thing for them is to play div 2 as part of the "program".

to do what. seems like you are making a big issue out of not and not surprising when it comes to aspley on this forum. if they want to try their luck at another state league club they would let them do that. just leaving the door open for them to come back to the club to play at div 2 level

Don't understand why they would encourage players to play for their Div 2 Team to try get a look-in to the NEAFL. Surely you can't make the jump from Div 2, leapfrog the QAFL, and slot back into NEAFL. Disgraceful if true.

what i've learnt over the years on this forum is that whenever someone makes a statement about aspley it's usually wrong and are just bashing the club as usual. the club would tell the player to look at all options. if the player would want to go to another club the would not stand in their way of going to another club. just another beat up as usual

Am I right in saying that you think John Blair's advice to Aspley to help develop the club is a disgrace? No idea who you are megaman but I'd suggest Blairy's credibility as a football man of substance beats your opinion every time.

Damo, I'm sure if Aspley told the players that don't make the cut to go somewhere else, there would be another uproar about chewing them up and spitting them out. Sorry mate, I don't think we can win on this one.

Let's not forget that many of the guys playing twos last year may struggle to get a regular spot on a QAFL firsts team. Are they better playing QAFL twos or QFA ones?

Besides, aren't they all big boys able to think for themselves?

Thanks Blairy! How is Payney going back at the Hornets is he still in good nick?

Looks to be in very good shape. I understand he thoroughly enjoyed the year playing with his brother in which they made a preliminary final appearance.

The boys tell me he's definitely excited about building on last years' effort and the squad he's coming back into.

Hornets Nest,

I don't think Payney will building much at all around Aspley apart from his regaining his midfield dominance - was not the other one of the reasons apart from playing a season with his brother for moving down to Rosebud - because Aspley couldn't find him the promised building job they had once touted. I hope he puts all that behind him and he wins another in this inaugural Competition, the B & F Medal, whatever they call the yet to be announced new one?

Not at all bb. He had a job with the Brittain clan and gave that up to move south.

Any indication how many numbers are training with the QLD clubs? Any timeframe when the first list lodgement has to go in?

Has Brennan actually signed for Thunder, he was named in their interested list but I don't believe they have put pen to paper. Also Liam Jurrah was listed in their interested train on list and would you bother to sign him ?
Also confused about a comment that Thunder in a separate blog have been favoured by home games over the years. Squad never train together with players coming from all over territory - Darwin, Jabiru, Tiwi Islands, Alice Springs and Gove. With that geography all SEQ clubs with the exception of trips to Darwin or Canberra play a home game every week ? Labrador is 3km from Southport, which is a little different from Bathurst Island to Alice Springs or Darwin to Alice Springs.

Brennan has not signed and i don't think he will, does not seem interested on the field up in Darwin atm
