Qbn 8-12-60
Southport 17-13-115

Went to the game pretty keen to see how the young Tigers who have become the most improved team in the East would fair against one of the powerhouse clubs of Queensland. Conditions I thought would have suited the home side but it was evident early that the bigger bodies of Southport would be difficult to compete against for 4 quarters.

1st term (after the opening 6 minutes) was a pretty even affair but unfortunately for the Tigers the visitors kicked 3 quick goals to start the match. SP showed plenty of pace and had clean skills as they shot out of the blocks to open a pretty hand lead early in the term. But credit to the Tigers who slowly started to get back into the match and only found themselves 2 goals down at the first change. Baxter was dominant for SP, Keil was getting plenty of it and Weymouth worked tirelessly in the ruck. For Qbn the usual suspects rose to the top in Griggs and Daniher working hard.

Qbn 1-3-9
SP 3-3-21

2nd term again was a hard fought affair with both sides showing desperation in cold wet conditions at DFP. The game became an arm wrestle with neither side giving an inch and the visitors would have been happy going into the sheds with a 16 point advantage. For SP, Baxter continued to find the footy and look dangerous around the goals, Burge was finding plenty of the footy with his hard running, Knights showed flashes of brilliance and Keil continued to get plenty of it. For the Tigers Conroy started to get into the game and Griggs and Daniher were doing their best to keep the home side in the contest.

Qbn 4-8-32
SP 7-6-48

3rd term is often described as the premiership quarter and in the first 15 minutes the cream rose to the top. SP totally dominated this period. Their work rate running back and moving forward was outstanding as they blasted the contest out of the water with a 7 goal blitz. In all the visitors kicked 8 goals for the term but the 7 goals in 15 minutes effectively killed the game as a contest. SP had winners all over the ground. Keil, Weymouth, Milani (who kicked 3 for the term), Wise, Seddon and Knight all contributed in a dominant term. Credit to the Tigers who after being shell shocked by the 15 minute burst held firm for the rest of the term to stem the bleeding. Under enormous pressure Roy Jaques was doing a great job on the dangerous Hughes and Daniher, Griggs and Conroy continued to rack up the stats but it was left to too few to do too much.

Qbn 5-11-41
SP 15-10-100

Injured playing coach K.Klemke was livid with his charges at the last break and obviously asked for more effort from his side and credit to the Tigers they battled well in the last term and out scored the visitors 3 goals to 2. Both sets of players looked very tired come siren time and while the margin was 55 points in the end, the game was a better contest than the scoreboard may suggest.

Qbn 8-12-60
SP 17-13-115

Goals SP - Baxter 4, Milani 3, Hughes, Knight 2, Screech, Whish Wilson, Flagg, Seddon, Burge, Mallan 1
Best SP - Seddon, Kiel, Weymouth, Mills, Wise, Knight, Baxter
Goals Qbn - Franchi, Fruend, Griggs 2, Kavanagh, Bryce 1
Best Qbn - Griggs, Daniher, Conroy, Jaques

This game showed me that their is a definite gap between East and North. SP had bigger bodies, their work rate and willingness to help each other was tremendous, they were cleaner moving the football and always out numbered the Tigers at contests. The game will be a great lesson to the Tigers who for large chunks of the game gave as good as they received to their opponents and when you consider 10 of SP's goals game in 21 minutes (3 goals in the first 6 minutes of the first term and 7 goals in the first 15 minutes of the third) the Tigers more than matched SP for 80% of the game.

The lesson they should take away from not just this week but last week against the Swans is that against the very best sides they need to maintain the effort for 4 quarters because any lapses will be punished.

For mine the Tigers are 12 months away from competing with the competitions heavy weights but when you consider where they were just last season they are rapidly on the improve. They showed today that their best is good enough but they need to do it for longer and share the work load better.

Well done to SP, the came here to play in foreign conditions and got the job done. They will be hard to beat if they play as they did in the first 15 minutes of the third term.

I am already hoping these 2 sides meet in the future to see if the Tigers do improve.

Excellent report ABH. I was concerned for the Tigers when SP ran out with the bigger bodies for a contest in the wet/ slippery conditions. Thought too their fitness and ability to flood and apply the press was as good as I have seen. Incidently I was talking to one of the many Ainslie "forward scouts" watching and he agreed they have similar problems with the size and fitness of the Nth boys.
Tigers are transitioning from a young ordinary side to being competitive for most of the game now. Even in their wins they do lapse at stages and this is part of that learning process I guess. One player who really impresses me is Andrew Swan. He has some changers at times but he really attacks the ball, plays on talls and smalls, is holding down key back positions and is coming off a knee reco.
Think next week v Ainslie will be a great game but those keen Ainslie fwd scouts might have stolen all the Tigers moves!!!

Not much more could be added to ABH's report.
Tigers never looked like getting on top was just whether
they would stay with SP.
SP work rate was sensational all day, seemed to have extra numbers
at every contest and broke very well.
Plenty of lessons to learn and will be interesting to see how the Tigers go against the
Tricolors next week.

Thanks Porkhead and One 4.

Think your right about Swan, I like the way the kid goes about it.

Also nice to see Tom Hollis back playing footy, he will be a good addition to our defence.

To answer JAB question regarding Kade, both he and Ben Klemke could be available this week from all reports.

Justabaraker, This is not junior footy, you can't possible think it's ok for players from another club in the same league/grade switching teams week-in, week-out. What if UWS win because of it and knock Ainslie out of 5th place come finals time. Do you think Ainslie or who ever it is are going to be happy?
That is why it's farcical.

Is Tom Hollis related to Mark Hollis who played for the Sutherland/Tuggeranong Bulldogs back in the 80s. Played in the '86 Premiership if I remember.

I agree. I know its a good oppurtunity for the players, but it hurts the clubs that are losing players. I know a few times players have been pulled out of Belco's NEAFL side to play for UWS. For a side that is struggling that doesn't make it any easier.
But at the end of the day its up to the other clubs to raise the standard of the league so that the AFL reserve teams don't have restrictions on who they can play.

Who and when 12Magpies?

Just to clarify my opinion, it would be a fantastic opportunity for talented players from other leagues like RFL, SFL and Farrer to play at a higher standard.

Hey Pies, Tom is Mark's son. I played against Mark in the '86 Premiership and felt very old when I played with, and coached Tom in what used to be the Tigers Reserves in the early 2000s. Sadly Tom's body isn't up to the rigours of NEAFL footy anymore. He's struggled with various issues, some chronic, over the years. But the club is pretty happy he's willing to stick at it in Div 1.

Very good effort by Belco on the weekend with an away trip against decent opponents. It is frustrating to lose as many of the tight games as we have this year but these were the games we were being easily beaten in last year so we are heading in the right direction. Good to see Simon Curtis in top form. He is clearly one of the best defenders in the comp and can shut down just about anyone on his day.

Hopefully in the back end of the season we can turn a few of these narrow losses around as the boys deserve them.

Massive game for hills eagles this week against eastlake! Does anyone think they're a chance to win considering they struggled abit against queanbeyan? The next 2 weeks for them will show how much of a chance they are come the business end of the season with eastlake this week and ainsle the following week...

I would be selecting both Canberra sides miksmif but their is no doubt that Hills as well as Qbn have surprised many with their efforts thus far.

I'd be tipping the same as much as I'd like to see a upset... I think the next 2 weeks will be a true indicater of where they are at...they've had a fairly kind draw thus far as they yet to play the swans and Labrador..I think their depth will be tested in the second half of the year with UWS using some of their players. Also with tougher games week in week out compared to the Sydney league and the extra travel to Canberra, I think it may takes its toll and there may be a chance of abit of a fade out

Youdogs, I've been thinking about why I don't agree with you that the NEAFL is farcical.
It's obvious from this forum that people in ACT/QBN love the combat with the traditional grass-roots rivals, and that finals success is the aim; but I don't believe that many outside your neck of the woods would see it that way for the NEAFL at this stage. The contributors to this forum are nearly all from your area, apart from ZigZagZoner and me. Plus the occasional banana-bender who is lost.

UWS is not trying for finals success at this point....they haven't even got their playing list filled and we know from KSheedy's comments that they're working on recruitment, upskilling and structures rather than winning games. They just don't have enough players yet to put out two teams each week, so they have no option but to use top-up players.
The Swans aren't going for finals glory either....the coach said as much in the NEAFL FOOTY TALK episode that was co-hosted by ABH. He said that they are working on providing match-ready players who can slot into the Big Team at a moment's notice.
Syd Uni and the Hills Eagles are trying to consolidate their places in the "Pathway system"- Syd Uni is out of finals contention for this year anyway. And Hills Eagles are juggling a lot of plates as they sort out their INs and OUTs from week to week. I'm not connected with the Hills Eagles but I have no doubt that they'd love the bragging rights that come with being in finals. But I also know that the benefits of this strategic alliance with the Giants will give them a lot more street cred than would finals action.

Each game the UWS plays is a talent quest where they can check out the best and brightest that is around - not surprising that they top-up with eligibles (possible zone selections, NT players, delisted rookies and so on). They're just not into equal playing fields to decide who will win a flag this year. It's only UWS that is bringing in top-ups from other NEAFL clubs, and they're nearly all from the Eagles.

So I don't think anyone cares much about player-switching week to week other than those involved with the ACT/QBN teams. For this season at least.

And if Ainslie gets knocked out of the finals race, I reckon they would be more crapped off about their cruel 2012 fixture than about UWS top-ups.

But I see better times coming anyway and I agree with what you say about how NEAFL gives a fantastic opportunity for talented players from the SW NSW comps to step up - same applies to the Black Diamond FL (Central Coast).
I can see a day in a couple of years when Clothier and Tangatalum run out for the Giants, Craig Moller runs out for Freo or the Swans, with Mark Armstrong proudly watching on from the coachs' box. And when that happens, we will know that NEAFL is not a farce.

I have to say Belco have stepped up more than I thought they would, and if they/you end up playing home games at Kippax next year as I understand is the plan then I think they'll climb a bit more. It's always nice playing home games at a ground that actually is your home ground. Personally wished that they were playing at Jamo still as I'm walking distance to it but c'est la vie.

Hills have done better than I expected as well. Was sure they were going to be in almost the same position as Sydney Uni but I'm glad to see them up and fighting. Shame that their being promoted to NEAFL means the mighty Penno Demons won't get their chance to shine.

Finally, I don't mind (for the moment) UWS using top-ups from anywhere they can find them. They only just have enough players on their senior lists to field both Seniors and Juniors, once you allow for injuries you automatically need top-ups and UWS have to take theirs from their Area (which includes Sydney Hills... But NOT Pennant Hills :D). Also, their academy is not quite where the Swans academy is interns of the age of the players coming through so they can't rely on their academy boys to be top-ups like the Swans can ATM. If they're still plundering in 7 years time then have a whinge but 'til then ease up.

Agreed, give it a rest abh I actually don't mind Greg Thompson on the show.
Maybe stick to qbn radio where us humane ppl can't hear you talk your dribble

Need to do better le bron as I have thicker skin than most!

I think GT does a good job also and any promotion for local footy is welcomed, do I believe I know more about local footy and would be a better commentator.....absolutely!

Stick to radio so I can't be heard.....that's a good one!

A couple of crackers this weekend with Queanbeyan v Ainslie and Hills v Eastlake. Does anyone know which game will be streamed?

I am with you on GT, ABH. Does a good job but more research would help. Reckon he has his freckle out covering every sport that moves so very hard for him to do this when in reality he is probably hoping to eventually get a Raiders,Brumbies or big AFL gig.
You will do me ABH. At least we are getting one game a week on the radio, its a good product, its called by an ex player and we have to start somewhere.
I read through the week that James Brayshaw, "the Footy Show" host and N Melb Chairman started doing around the grounds in Adelaide for the ABC for "chicken feed" so ABH you might be on your way.
