I'm understanding of Neal's situation with his baby. I'm just annoyed that he stuck around for the high-paying part of his deal and is running off before the lower-paying years. Any future front-loaded contract should have a clause where a player must pay the extra money back if they request a trade midway through.

I wonder if the AFLPA would even allow such a clause to exist.

Being “significantly” front ended doesn’t help.

Lot of guess work there IMO. If we signed him up for 5 year 4 million it puts Neale at 800k territory. Neale never came up in million dollar contracts in both 2019 and 2020. Even if we place him at 900-950 for first 2 years, it only takes about 200-300k max front ended in first 2 years.

We got Joe this year so if anything the squeeze would be tighter in 2021 payscale.

Sometimes starting a family could also become a pretty challenging journey for couples.

I don’t see how that changes the fact that they chose to move away from WA and sign a 5 year contract!

If we get freo’s first round pick as a minimum and have three first rounders going into the draft….
look at bringing in someone like Luke Parker
Is this really a terrible outcome?
I love Neale and don’t want to lose him, but I think we need to look at the possible positives out of this

Loads of work contacts have twist clauses - Repayment of relocation expenses, if you quit you can't work for a competitor or set up your own business for specified period, bonus paybacks. All designed to protect the business you join.

Sure, it'll be negotiated but "trade value" will be distorted by the fact you're probably locked in to dealing with one club. It's not an auction. No one is going to be making a better offer than Freo. That's why I imagine Brisbane would be trying to talk him into staying if they can.
By this logic we should have got Neale for a big discount in 2018 since he nominated us as his destination. In fact practically every major player trade involves the player nominating one club he wants to go to. That doesn't mean the club parting with the player gets fleeced.

There would be meltdowns if Freo pay that price.

Thats honestly a fair deal. Freo fans are fairly deluded with this stuff but let history be our guide. If you look at what Beams, Cameron and Gibbs went for recently in similar situations - the suggestion about is unders - and he is better than all those guys.

I think both camps agree that it's a 'meh - do it if it's fair' situation.. but our decision won't be effected by Freo offering unders because they 'don't really need him'..

Get Lachie and nail their pick 14 in a compromised draft and they are laughing.

You got him for less than you would have otherwise, surely?

My point is that it's difficult to talk about trade value when there's only one bidder. There's no "market". It's just a question of what the two parties agree.

To be fair it's not like he won't be putting in the work for those lower paid years, he'll just be getting paid by a different club and I don't think anyone can argue he wasn't well and truly worth what he earned in the years he was here.

He signed a front loaded contract before covid hit. He'd be staying if it wasn't for this shithousery lockdown rules. WA very hard to deal with. I can see why she doesn't want to be locked out from family.

Not sure those are all suitably analogous.

I just wonder if Freo think they're close enough to start shipping out top 10 picks.

With Tapping rumoured to have an offer from WC could it be that Freeo will not be the only suitor. Kennedy nearing the end.......Yeo looking for some decent rehab staff.......Charlies little brother......."stars" not performing to potential possibly being shopped around magpie style.......

Watching Nick Del Santo on AFL Tonight.

He thinks we should ask Lachie to commit for one more year & then agree to let him go.

I'm not sure if this list is good enough to win a flag, but they're a better team with him in it. Their window is open for another year & then will close.....

What the actual ****?

Will be sad to lose Lachie but family comes first. He's been fantastic for us over the last 3 years and given his all over that time. I don't feel he owes us anything, whatever we paid for him he has repaid us and more.

The front ended contract talk is a bit silly as that would have been a decision driven by the club, not Lachie.

I feel this year has actually been good preparation for life without him. We've had to make do without a fully fit and firing Lachie for most of the year anyway. We are better side with him in it but I don't think losing him will be the end of our premiership aspirations.

They just open their mouth and shit comes out.

At any other job you could put in your notice (2 weeks, 4 weeks or whatever) unless you have a non-compete clause, which if my employment law memory is correct have been difficult to enforce in Aus. Footballers get paid significantly more than the average person so you can argue they waive some of their rights in that sense.

Personal reasons are often why people leave jobs - I left Brisbane to work, then Canberra, then brisbane again, all without my employer being able to hold me to extra years of contract.

As far as I'm aware, non-compete clauses are literally unenforceable in Australia unless you're being paid for that period of time. Otherwise there's no ongoing commitment to the contract by the company so none required for you.

WC have to use a first-rounder this year and probably can't pay Neale 800k.

Straight swap for Jackson Nelson?

NSW, ACT, VIC will, the rest of the country - who knows. Tas and SA not too far behind. I'd be stunned if we don't get there by January.
The rest will as soon as they get their COVID leak that someone superspreads. That's what seems to force people's hands and minds. :(

I think we will get to 70% reasonably quick but the last 10% might take a while.
