That was only on his left foot though that he couldn't kick 40

Fair call.
I've been suggesting a tagger role but irrespective of any new role for Ned, he needs one.
The bottom line is we can't just pigeon-hole yet another young midfielder as a small forward... as we may as well have then recruited a specialist small forward who is good around goals.

This all gets back to that we should be rotating more players, including Ned through the midfield for parts of the game.

Think it is time to send him back to the sanfl for a midfield hitout... then look to bring him back in a different forward/midfield role.

We should be trying different things when rebuilding a new team - not sticking to the same structure that hasn't exactly worked well for sometime.

That’s the thing, I think he’s been pigeon holed into being the pressure guy, and for all his faults you can’t say he’s not good at that. You can watch and see he apples fanatical pressure and his tackle and pressure stats are good.

But that’s all we’ve seen from him, the whole point of us having a SANFL team is so that we can try things like playing Ned in the midfield.

He has an elite tank, his tackle pressure is excellent. He was drafted as being evasive and a great decision maker, which we have actually seen (although not regularly) at this level, and for the role he plays he actually wins a decent chunk of contested ball. He could be a good midfielder, and there’s no harm in finding out.

Absolutely agree about Ned having a ping in the midfield. He could be quite creative and he could certainly be very annoying for the oppo if you put him up against someone like Oliver, or Boak. Imagine him standing Selwood!

I think that in general we should be more willing to swing the changes. We all got a bit excited at the few minutes Murray spent in the middle, and Billy certainly brought something we hadn't seen when thrown down back. And then there's Mcasey and Worrell etc ... We are, after all, a bottom side, so let's get creative!

Not much chance of that while Nathaneil van Craigo is running our midfield.

We were literally just talking about how we’d like to see him play midfield in the 2s.

And what is it he is bringing to the table exactly? Doesn't have size or speed, can't accumulate, no goal sense.

If the club signed me right now would I get a crack at every position on the park before you finally put a line through me?

  • His pressure and tackling is great
  • He’s super fit
  • For his position he actually wins a decent amount of contested ball
  • He has shown he can be a good, creative ball user, although he hasn’t shown it consistently, I suspect that may be because of his role
  • He’s evasive

Whether you think he can play or not, he’s contracted for two more years. We may as well throw him into different spots in the twos.

  • His pressure and tackling is great - his tackling stats are just slightly above average
  • He’s super fit - Speed is more important and he isn't better than average and I don't know if his endurance numbers are necessarily anything special
  • For his position he actually wins a decent amount of contested ball - He's never got over 20 disposals EVER
  • He has shown he can be a good, creative ball user, although he hasn’t shown it consistently, I suspect that may be because of his role - I don't recall him creating ever, always kicks to straight forward leads
  • He’s evasive - He's not especially fast or agile, this is proven by the fact he gets caught often, also because he has poor awareness. Doesn't know his own limits, bites off more than he can chew often. *edit Jimmy Rowe is less athletically gifted than Ned but he is aware of his own limits and has good awareness in traffic. He will slow things down or move laterally if he doesn't see a good passing option. Rowe is a great example of what Ned could do but refuses because he wants to prove to everyone how tough he is.

Whether you think he can play or not, he’s contracted for two more years. We may as well throw him into different spots in the twos. We shouldn't burn the opportunity for others to develope just because he's contracted for another year

Late 1st rounder/borderline 2nd rounder and the Super draft doesn't look so super, Kings brothers and Walsh are elite and potentially Smith and Rankine.
An apologist for the AFC - think you're deliberately underselling a few others in that draft. Smith is a gun, Rankine now showing what the hype was about, Thomas was very good last half of last season before the Norf malaise set in, Blakey a really good HB with great skills, Lukocious downplayed by some Crows supporters now he's not coming home.

The non supers in the first round of that draft are with us! Or several of them

No, just basic football knowledge. Blakey, Lukosius and Thomas will be good players but they won't be elite compared to the Kings brothers and Walsh and I said Smith and Rankine both have potential to be elite so slightly higher elite quality than the normal draft with 4-5 elite players.

And of Walsh, Lukosius, Rankine, King's x2, Rozee, Smith, Thomas and Blakey noting we bid on Thomas and likewise it would have been matched if we bid on Blakey which of those were available to us. The only serious talent I can see we missed out on is Butters.

And the value cost of not trading up? We stood pat with our 2 x first rounders and basically ended up with a fringe back pocket and a fringe forward pocket. Although to be fair we could of traded up to Pick 1 and Hamish still would of found a way to **** it up.

He wasn't even on the injury list on Tuesday ?
Yeah in Nicks presser he said it was a little bit "high performance" and a little bit "footy" .. Ned is obviously Nicks little pet so he doesn't want to be open with the members and say dropped to protect his little man.
It's the sort of car salesman bullshit that will eventually see Nicks out the door.

So you agree that the wasted pick on Ned should've been used to package and move up to get one of your mentioned players..

Welcome to the Party 4 yrs later.

Yep

given one of his best traits is to run harder and longer than most , would definitely like to see him pushed up into midfield especially in second halfs where his endurance can be a weapon

We need to get some of our players playing to their strengths by giving them right roles for them to put them on show

No, isn’t it up to the player to succeed regardless of role or how others impact their performance?
