Ned in a Nutshell



Some would say the missed set shot from 15m out is quintessential Ned, however this play to me sums up his career in about 8 seconds (clip is in half speed, playback speed at 2x for real time).

• Starts off with a trademark fumble, but let's absolve blame on this thanks to Woz's tumbler kick. But then, it's McHenrying time:
• Takes possession, looks up, sees a defender ahead of him
• Knows Hinge is behind him in the pocket, ignores him
• Sees Curtin completely free in the pocket, could draw the defender then pass, ignores him
• Has Crouch boundary side with Jones in effectively a 2 on 1 further afield for a hand ball, ignores them
• Has Soligo with lots of space in front of him inboard, fakes a handball to him
• Pulls the switch kick, which was a chance of being smothered to be fair

All while deciding instead to turn inboard, instead of towards the boundary, and retreat by handballing to the most dangerous spot instead of the aforementioned Curtin and Hinge who are both in a mountain of space with arms outstretched.

So I counted about 6 different options Ned had there - and the one he chose was to head back toward the opposition goal.

Rowey has actually said that he understands James getting cut as we were getting Rankine.

What he’s critical of is our lack of drafting an elite midfield and wasting picks on guys like McAsey, plus lack of players we’ve traded in, all valid criticisms.

Yes, it was actually quite a good handball back to Worrell, but of course it was going to be intercepted by Keane because he's not going to let the ball lollop past his head back towards goal when he knows an opposition player is behind him.

Not giving the handball to Curtin was the crazy one there. He'd recovered from the fumble by then, Curtin was in oodles of space, with nobody in a position to block the handball, and Curtin had acres of empty space in front of him.

I do like how all the other Crows players just kind of stop and stand still watching him run in circles. As if they're saying "Oh man, here goes McHenry doing his thing again." All except for Curtin who presumably hasn't had time to get used to him yet, and instead gives a big "I'm wide open man, right here" arm motion.

When we’re over 200 on that pressure rating, we’re winning. That is what McHenry brings. Not everyone is a Rolls Royce. McHenry has played his role the last month, especially with the absence of Murphy and Pedlar, who can bring similar pressure in that small forward role.

We'd all love to have a Cyril Rioli playing that role, but the reality is there's not too many like him and it is a very hard position to play and after an ordinary start to the season, McHenry has given it a fair crack in recent games IMO.

The idea that Ned brings pressure is a myth. For a small forward he is rated average for tackles, below average in spoils, below average for tackles inside 50 and below average for pressure acts.

As for the “Rolls Royce” that you presumably might refer to. Rankine is above average in all those categories.

Going back to drafting a midget short forward who wasn't fast and didn't kick goals, each week from there I try not to vent my frustration about Ned .
But he keeps being having no impact except stuffing up and having no actual AFL skill set .
And Nicks keeps on picking him and even after winning last few showdowns which is like winning finals (not that remember Those) I just can't renew faith in Nicks due to his continued selection of Ned and other battlers.
You have to note when posters highlight his stuff upon ,that he only gets a few touches anyway .

I will always remain convinced that if Rowe was contracted and Ned/Murphy was not, they would have been delisted and Jimmy not.

Nicksy and Ned were both out of contract this year. That was our best hope to get rid of him. The extension of Nicks all but assures that Ned will be extended at some point this year.

Probably because he wasn’t playing against grown men. Sheer intensity and effort was probably enough when he was 17.

Personally I don’t think Jimmy would have made it.

But he has a right to be aggrieved that he got the arse when McHenry has countless opportunities.

Comparing their stats from 2022 is interesting, almost identical across the board in every category, yet one was delisted and the other is a first choice player.

Just thinking right now.

One of his best attributes might make him a fairly good Cornerback in the NFL.

The way he flips his hips to ensure his man doesn't beat him by going around him.

If he were 3-4 inches taller he could be a pro-bowler in the NFL.

Maybe he should give it a go? Would make a whole lot more money than in the AFL.

Grigg wasn't fast enough of mind or foot to handle the pressure at AFL level, it's not uncommon.
