Both great players.

Bizarre how close their stats are in so many areas when they are so different in terms of their playing style.

Both likely to go on next year as well I reckon so 800 goals may be within reach

I think it depends on which team they have around them. Hawkins as a lead-up mark-and-kick, or to provide a shield for team-mates.
Jack if the ball tends to get delivered with a bit less science.
Jack at ground level in tight situations, just seems a little more nimble. Tom at ground level in other cases.

I get the feeling Jack continues to work harder when things aren't going well, not that Hawkins gives up but doesn't seem to find a way to become effective as often after a slowish start. That could be completely wrong, just a personal feeling that might be biased by the way games are called, the games I've seen, or any of a number of factors.

Tom Hawkins is a cheating sack of s**t so Riewoldt wins by default.

Tom the better player, Jack the better whiner and bitch

Hard to split

Some things really are in the eye of the beholder.

Not trying to start an argument - I’m fairly neutral on the subject, natural bias would probably make me choose Tom but there are multiple arguments you can make the other way.

Just prompted by a comment in the Hawkins 700 goals thread
At this moment or over their entire careers?

Didn't he still have to kick more goals than any other player in those years to win them though?

A Coleman is a Coleman, even with a lower tally he still had to be beat everyone else in the league.
In 2012 Buddy kicked just 6 goals less than Jack and missed 6 games. Jack played every game.
In 2018 Buddy kicked just 6 goals less than Jack and missed 4 games. Jack played every game.

And I haven't even looked at any other forwards from those years. Not trying to take anything away from him as a player, but as for awards, Jack got them in weak years.

Hawkins first 5 years weren’t as good as Jack’s but Hawkins will play on and Riewoldt probably won’t so you could make a case and say Hawkins last 5 are better. At worst they’re equal

Taking out the game where Jack got concussed against St Kilda and had only 6% game time, Jack just slightly averaged more goals than Buddy did in 2018

Oh please...

His opponent was on one leg

That idiot Malthouse should have subbed off Reid at 3 qtr time and moved Tarrant on to Hawkins, everybody in Australia knew that

Riewoldt by the length of Flemington straight
Kickstarted his rise to superstardom. Good bloke, Mick.

It was nothing less than sabotage

We probably still would have lost, but leaving a stricken Reid on the ground AND on Hawkins ended the match as a contest

Cheers Mick and cheers Eddie for the stupid succession plan
Hawkins ascended that day. Mick probably knew he'd gobble up Tarrant too so he spared him the blushes.

Hawkins was rubbish that day, he did nothing until Reid started limping, then he took a few grabs but missed his shots badly... no matter, donkey Mick left Reid on him one out so Hawk kept getting multiple chances til eventually some went through, only 3 though

If that was Riewoldt that day instead of Hawkins, he would have kicked 10

I struggle to find an argument that puts Hawkins ahead.

Jack Riewoldt has had the more difficult career, with a winning average of just above 50% (as opposed to Hawkins 70+%). Riewoldt plays at a bigger club where scrutiny is definitely higher. They're statistically very, very similar. Ultimately it comes down to career achievements (not premierships - although Jack does have more).

In finals, Riewoldt averages 2 goals per game (from 15 finals), Hawkins averages 1.65 goals a game (from 29 finals).

Hawkins overall goal assists advantage over Jack is as negligible as Jack's overall goal tally advantage over Hawkins.

Jack has 3 Coleman medals to Hawkins 1.

They've had very similar statistical careers, Jack will retire with more accolades and ultimately when you look at the numbers, he's probably ahead.

I don't have an issue with people saying Hawkins over Riewoldt, I personally think Hawkins edges Riewoldt out in terms of what they offer.

I feel Jacks importance and skills are still underappreciated a lot by the general footy public. Back when he was winning Colemans, he was unstoppable on a lead and did it in a team where we didn't have much else up forward. He's changed his game as we have got personnel around him for the better of the team, and still impacts frequently. We won a flag in 2017 where he pretty much played as our only key forward and main target, we had Jacob Townsend and Josh Caddy as our other tall forwards.
