New Assistants!

Just been watching a Gavin Wanganeen highlights reel on Youtube, may have teared up a little.

Would love to bring him in a role more permanent into the club, understand he is a role model at the moment but would love to bring him in and become a skills coach of some form.

Really think he could help to build Boak, Gray, Hitchcock, Phillips and think he could provide a lot of support to Kane.

Gavin is a true professional and a hugely modest player, I think he could be a key to help bringing Kane back to his best. Which I honestly believe could still happen.

We need a ruck coach amongst our assistants and SR has the credentials for that role as much as anyone. Many of us were as negative about Pitman's appointment and look how well he turned out. I say give him a go.

I'd be more than happy with Rehn as one of our new assistants. We could do far worse. Outsider who has experience at 3 AFL clubs, has spent time as an assistant at Brisbane to one of the great coaches, has coached a side in his own right. Hell he even got Westies into a GF, anyone who can do that is a miracle worker. Get him I say.

I agree.
Anyone who has coached a side in his own right plus worked with leigh matthews would be a great addition.

...so long as he doesnt leak to stupid and wrinkles ... yea!

There was a very strong rumour started by a mate of Rehns that he didn't "work" with Mathews at all. Mathews barely spoke to him and certainly didn't listen to anything Rehn had to offer hence Rehn leaving.

Just a rumour.

So Matthews thought he was a spud? Maybe Matthews was falling asleep because it took too long to finish a sentence. People critise 1 ruckman as a coach imagine at least 2, 3 if Lade came back lol

I just can't see us pulling a high profile panel of coaches together! Which is a shame. Because IMO we need coaches moreso than players!

I couldn't give a rats as to what level profile they are - as long as they can coach and give it their best shot.

This whole assistant coaching caper has become an industry in itself. There isn't much difference in the knowledge between guys at that level, especially among players who watch games for a living or are recently out of the system.

Our problem is we didn't have all our lines staffed full time. Now we should be able to fil all those positions and give players the time and attention they deserve. that's a start but let's be real ... at the end of the day it's the amount of talent on the list that makes an assistant coach look good.

Sure Rehn isn't the greatest radio commentator, but that's not going to be his job with us. If he has good ideas and can convey them to the players and other coaches then he is more than welcome.

If a person's profile is a true measure of their coaching ability then surely we should be going all out to get Fevola as an assistant. :)

I agree with Natman and Ford's posts above.

Calibre may have been a better word, hypothetical but a panel of Rehn, Jarman, Primus and Hocking doesn't install the confidence of say Leon Cameron, Watters, Hinkley, Primus. Just as an example.

Jarman is a definite DNW and if Port can get Watters in that would be a good outcome.

Sure all those guys have good reputations but the reality is you're not going to attract them all over here. It's a wish list.

I bet Mickey Godden could wrap his head around AFL playing structures. Even Rick McGowan if he can be found again.

I agree, we all know the Laird scenario, but completely. I just think Jarman and even Rehns history is enough to know they have had their chance, plus I would love no media people

Just throwing up a name from left field here... Terry Wallace?

Despite his disaster at Richmond (known to chew up coaches) he actually did a pretty good job with the Bulldogs: with limited resources he took them from 15th in 1996 to 3rd in 1997/1998 with a 72-68-2 record.

He might still have something to offer Primus as an experienced assistant coach who has had a few years off to recharge the mind.

FTR I rate Wallace higher than Laidley in the coaching department.

No. Please god no. We may as well have kept Choco on if we're going to re-introduce those ideas into the mix.

Wallace is the guy that loved Jordan McMahon so much he drafted him twice. Pass.

Maybe he can go coach Glenelg.

I heard about two weeks ago that Rick McGowan was in the final mix. Now I only heard this on the radio and there was obviously no official source to back it up.

surely that warrants a red card to kaysee....

NO its fair enough for anyone to ask "why not?" on here, the responses can always be entertaining.

Now if kaysee suggested one of Wrinkes or Stupid, sure, instant red card(s), perma ban, hung drawn & quartered... and that's for a first offence :p
