Wonder if St Kilda's financial mess will be off-putting to coaching candidates? Or maybe they will be forced into a safety-first decision.

At least we've been through that and have some financial security to build on.

We struggle getting our financial realities presented or even acknowledged by local media, what is the perception likely to be interstate ? IMO if you snap-polled non-south aussies in the footy industry outside SA with "who is more financially secure?" I'd expect more to say St Kilda than Port. Short term St Kilda may have more money to spend on footy ops but long term 1-2 small or mid size Vic clubs are likely to migrate and/or merge). People just tend to weight short term certainty higher than long term probabilities (/insert cheesy Carbon tax reference here).

To someone wanting to climb AC ranks their perception of the state of a list and facilities ought to weigh more than an abstract impression of finances. They work in footy, not finance (OK the stench of salary cap pressure may be the aspect of finances they care for - we're in a better place than St Kilda on current rumours). Do they see St Kilda as say Brisbane '06, a once-great group on the long way down ? Port's list as more attractive (how did you react to that?) because we've already had the Year Of Hell Playing The Kids (whether true or not, I think this is the perception), or do they see us more like Melbourne ~5 years ago (minus any prospect of multiple PPs, but leave that inconvenient truth aside for now). We are led to believe our facilities are as good as any.

So why the hell am I surprised that on 3 out of 3 counts (finance, list state, facilities) we should be an equal or more attractive destination than St Kilda for a genuinely aspiring AC ? Maybe media perceptions matter more (do more damage) than I give them credit for.

The other possibility is that out of naivete, dour stinginess (we rate them equally, prepared to wait for the last bloke standing!) or "interference from outsiders" we've made below par offers. I don't want to go there yet, let's put evidence before hysteria for once  Not getting any of Hinkley, Watters, Cameron or even Harvey for example, that may be pitchfork time.

Now, I wouldn't expect that it's necessary for the senior coach to be at Trade Week especially considering he was just there for the Combine, so the fact Primus was on a morning flight to Melbourne today might suggest a meeting or meetings on the assistant front?

Let's hope so!

Of course the senior coaches are at Trade Week. Matty was there today.

It would not be a bad idea to have the senior coach in Melbourne really. He just has to nod or veto for the most part when it comes to trade deals, but being ready to go and convince a fringe player to come to Port in person could be invaluable.

I guess my train of thought was that they're not really necessary- more the domain of the footy managers. I guess it must be common for all of them to be there for the reason you gave.

Yeah,

You would find every coach would be there.

Alot of players up for trade arent known until the club are in meetings with other clubs, so the coach should be there.

Granted he could spend some time chatting to Assistants aswell ;).

Havent been reding this thread but has Roy Laird's name been thrown up? surely he would have more to offer than someone like Josh Carr as much as I love the guy.

My understanding is that Roy Laird is petrified of flying - has no interest in it whatsover. Apparently Clarkson was very keen to get him to Hawthorn, but the whole idea of flying even just once a month put Laird off.

Given Port travel every 2 weeks, there would be very little chance of Lairdy being that interested.

does he have big commitments outside of football? surely the pay packet would be hard to resist... strange

I dont mind that. I cant beleive a thing that comes out of the media though untill someone from port backs it up.

We could hook him up with Skype.

Roy and Dean could host away game functions at the club, coaching in a small glass cube with wifi and skype, as we all eat steak and chips and watch them watch the game!

Gee hope not. He's as boring as batshit and takes forever to make a point.

This. As a radio presenter, I don't think I have heard anyone waffle on as much as he does when making a point. Then there's the sentences that he starts not having any idea where he will end up.

This being said, despite the dubious communications skills, I think he has an astute football brain and thinks a bit laterally. Could do worse.
