I always supported the "other" Melbourne teams (Magic, Titans and Dragons) and for me supporting Melbourne United is far easier than supporting the Tigers.
Who said there had to be only one Melbourne team. If you don't want to support the Melbourne Tigers and support the other teams then support Melbourne United. But what you are saying was the problem with the other Melbourne Teams. There was the Nunawading Spectres which became the Eastside Spectres which merged with the Southern Melbourne Saints which was the Westside Saints and before that the St. Kilda Saints. The side was the South East Melbourne Magic. The Coburg Giants became the North Melbourne Giants. They merged with the Magic to become the Victoria Titans. The Titans became the Giants, and then they where no more. These three Melbourne NBL Clubs changed their names and merged, while the Melbourne Tigers were the Melbourne Tigers.

Hopefully the Melbourne Tigers will return to the NBL and we will see a true Melbourne rivalry between the Melbourne Tigers and Melbourne United.

The North Melbourne Giants were a Championship winning team back in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

The North Melbourne Giants was the home of many champion players like Scott Fisher.

Bring back the Booze Less Giants.

Seeing Brisbane's new colours just doesn't feel right.

And the Mitchell & Ness uni's look good. But their own logo is crap.

Melbourne United are the Melbourne Tigers, though?

The Tigers have changed their name to United, it's the same franchise, they've still got the same heritage.
Melbourne United claim to be an amalgamation of the past Melbourne teams. But they only count the Tigers championships and heritage. Make of that what you will.

I'm not sure they claim to be an amalgamation of all teams, just that they now wanted to represent the entirety of Melbourne. They still consider themselves the same franchise that the Tigers were, but they wanted to broaden their appeal.

I've heard that the owners would be willing to relinquish the rights to the Tigers name and colours to a new team in the future, but that they still want to retain the history of the old Tigers in terms of Championships etc, which I think would just be problematic.

I've found it very hard to get on board with Melbourne United. I'll admit I only had a passive interest in the Tigers (never went to any games or bought merch, but I would try to watch games if they were on TV at a decent time), but I still considered them the team I supported, and the death of that frankly rather iconic Australian sports brand was quite sad. I almost refuse to support United on principle to be honest.

The "amalgamation" of the Victorian teams thing is just marketing jargon to gain greater market share in terms of support. Others have pointed this out, but United are still essentially the Tigers, (albeit in branding) so accumulating the championships of those former and separate entities would just be plain wrong.

*Also it would be quite a shame from a parochial Western Australian's perspective to see the Wildcats surpassed as the NBL's most successful club.

I'm the same. It's very strange the way they claimed the Tigers' history despite the Tigers continuing to exist at a non-NBL level (Fitzroy anyone?)

I only ever went to two games (one at the Cage, one at the Arena in Geelong when Patty Mills was playing) and have one jersey. Still can't get behind Utd though, not least because of their name...

Melbourne United claim to have four NBL Championships, but the 2014/15 NBL season was advertised as their inaugural season. They want what is good for them about the Melbourne Tigers, the four championship, but don't want what is bad for them, the fact that the Tigers were an opposition club to the club of many Victorian Basketball Clubs so don't support them. Either they are the Melbourne Tigers with a new name and new colours or they are a club that has been created for the whole of the Melbourne Basketball Community, they can't be both.

Melbourne United is the stupidest rebranding in Australian sporting history.

The NBL is a terrible, poorly run league which has absolutely zero idea on how to capitalise on the popularity of basketball in Australia. Basketball is massive here and yet our national league is floundering like a magikarp.

The ONLY good thing about the NBL is the historic franchises. The Perth Wildcats. The Adelaide 36ers. The Brisbane Bullets. The Sydney Kings. The Melbourne Tigers. These are iconic, lovable franchises that the people of those cities will get behind instantly if the NBL sorts it's shit out.

In throwing away the Tigers name, Melbourne became a big bash franchise without the fanfare or community interest. Boring as batshit. At least the big bash franchises are actively trying to be generic. Melbourne United have actually done this in an attempt to garner more support. The enormous misread of what sports supporters want is symbolic of the problems the entire NBL faces.

Updated the Wildcats logo just for fun- Not much difference, just changed the angle and limited the colours.
