My only criticism of that Pies jumper is that the stripes protrude through the top of the Emirates logo on the back
I really liked the stripes going above the logo when the jumper was first revealed, but after seeing on TV it does look a bit messy. Big fan of the black trim though.

The goal umpires not signalling in the middle of the goalsquare after a goal is really irritating me for some reason

Welcome to the early 90’s and earlier.

Actually the early 90’s the goal umpire would signal at the field umpire, so half the time they were signalling away from the camera.

Funnily enough when the SANFL had a 70’s round in 2006, and they goal umpires brought back the butcher coats, they also signalled from any spot for that game, and it actually looked pretty cool. I think it’s the modern uniforms that makes signalling from anywhere look sloppy. Still, we’ll get used to it in time, and will add to the tension for some close goals, as we wait for the umpire’s signal before celebrating.

I reckon this is exactly why they'd be doing it. If its a close thing, you already know its a goal as soon as the umpire starts walking to the centre. Gil and Hocking have probably decided thats not exciting enough.

It’s good when you’re at a game you can always tell if a team has kicked a goal -the goal umpire can run to the bar but if they don’t hit their chest you know their going back to signal a goal

There's a new head goal umpiring coach (Chris Appleton) and he wants to do away with the more rigid things in goal umpiring and make it appear more relaxed and casual. Signalling anywhere along the goal line is the main change but other things that have been implemented that most people won't pick up is being more relaxed when writing the scores on the score cards after a goal and not having to be in step when walking out and off the ground.

I'm not a fan of anywhere along the goal line. I noticed in a Marsh game the goal umpire signaled right next to the goal post, blocking the view of the camera.

That ridgidness of it is what made it professional imo

Will he stop the boundary umpires from doing their little pirouette as they stop when taking ball back to centre?

Can't say that I've really noticed or cared when watching on TV unlike seemingly everyone else here. Perhaps I'll find it frustrating when I'm at a game and need to watch the goal umpires movements to figure out if a shot is a goal or a point when the ball is on the other end of the ground.

I loved the umpires uniforms from 2003-2011, the red, green, yellow and white shirts and caps with black shorts or pants looked great and the contrast between the umpires and the players was pretty much always fantastic. Even better was the PlayStation sponsorship that was present throughout the middle part of the time using these uniforms

While we're on the topic of goal umpires, this fella' was always spot on! It still amazes me how he could make it to so many games during the 2004 season.

I remember he signalled a goal while standing 5 metres in the field of play.
