I think it'd look much better without the gold pants.

The red is the usual same design as what you see on Michigans helmet (and Bears retro helmet).

I believe its like from the old leather helmets that looked like grills, like what current Rugby players still wear, that were painted with a color to distinguish from other trams helmets.
