I know there's a couple of threads about this, but I thought I'd start a new one dedicated to peoples' thoughts on the ideal TV rights make up.

Firstly, in terms of aesthetics, I'd like to see a

Foxtel/ Nine Bid

Nine

-Friday night

-Saturday afternoon

-Saturday night

-Sunday afternoon

all games shown LIVE appart from when:
- the game is shown in a home market (an not sold out, similar clauses that exist now and contingent negotiations between clubs/ AFL permitted)
- if the local station does not want to show the game LIVE the game is to be allocated to Foxtel (determined a fixed time prior, e.g. 24 hrs)

for example, if Nine Adelaide elect to air a Friday game night played in Melbourne at 8.30pm (on a one hour delay), in the SA market, this game is allocated to Foxtel to air LIVE.

Under this system the similar sort of thing would happen in QLD and NSW markets where AFL is seldom if even aired live.

Foxtel

-Saturday afternoon (second preference)

-Saturday night (second preference

-Sunday afternoon (second preference)

-Sunday afternoon (third preference - twilight)

Foxtel, under this deal would have to bring back a dedicated AFL channel with the local market channels.

I, as many others, also believe the AFL should offer web streams of a selected range of games on a pay-per-view basic.

nah, needs to be more than one FTA network showing AFL, lest we continue with bullshit television scheduling in northern states. yeah, we might get relaxed anti-siphoning laws allowing 9 to show AFL live on its multichannel, but i doubt they'd do it. who is going to pay for advertising during an AFL match on 9's second channel in sydney when they're showing rugby leage on it's first channel?

it looks like the 9th game is going to be a saturday twilight game, which i think is massively disappointing. monday night footy on ten/one would've been very cool.

Friday nite - Seven

Saturday 2pm - Nine (the value of this game is also boosted because it becomes Thursday night or Monday arvo for those games)

Saturday 2pm - Fox sports

Saturday 4.45pm - Ten/One (which then goes into the NRL game that they'll try and get on one - this is unlikely though, fox sports will be gung ho for the super saturday)

Saturday 7.30pm - Seven (Nine gets rugby union soon, so this avoids the clash)

Saturday 7.30pm - Fox sports

Sunday 1pm - Nine (leading into NRL in northern states)

Sunday 2pm - Fox sports

Sunday 4.45pm - Ten/One

I don't think there's an issue with all three networks holding rights. I don't think it'll dilute values because the AFL should have the next bid as individual timeslots, or at least in 2 or 3 game packages. (the argument i've heard some use is that its not ideal because the next step will be networks bidding on clubs - i think that's way different, and not something the AFL will go for)

If anything, i suspect value will go up - bidding for friday nites would be massive. then go in order what you think match value will be. the value of the bottom match becomes artificially inflated because then egos and the notion of "the home of AFL" come into play.

It won't go as I've laid it out here - i've tried to do it baring in mind what i think network aspirations are (in the case of ten/one), and baring in mind other commitments (in the case of nine). But hey, it's how i'd like to see it.

With 6 of 9 games on free to air, there'll also need to be assurances of a more equitable draw. i don't think local teams always need to be on free to air, provided there is an assurance that 66% of each clubs matches will be on free to air television to reflect the fact that 66% of matches will be on free to air.

the next media rights need to move with the times. not only are we likely to need multi channeling (my layout doesn't, but realistically, it will), but we need a far better online deal. i know bigpond pay for rights, but there needs to be a better service for being able to stream matches online. i don't know enough about tv contracts to know how it works, but you look at particularly the NFL in the US, and we're ridiculously backwards in how we treat the internet.

i don't agree - the afl are not going to want less than half the games being broadcast on fta. especially given the free to air channels are their cash cow.

they won't get a billion dollars if five out of nine go to pay tv. if the afl offers packages or single game bidding, it'll almost lock fox out of a lot of games.

All games LIVE throughout the country. Use multi-channels when necessary.

I'd love to see the channels go to the Government and ask for a little $$ in return for showing games exclusive to One/GO/7Two. Would really encourage the takeup of digital TV as the switchover approaches, and would give more flexibility to the broadcasters.

My ideal weekly fixture:

Friday Night Football
Nine 7.30pm Live
GO 7.30pm Live in RL markets

Saturday Football
FOX 2pm Live
Ten/One 3pm Live
FOX 7.30pm Live
Ten/One 7.30pm Live

Sunday Football
Nine/GO 1.30pm Live
Nine/GO 3.30pm Live
FOX 4.30pm Live

MONEday Night Football

One 7.30pm Live & Exclusive

Telstra will join bid for the next TV rights deal as well, to broadcast live games on their T-box and online. They've set up their AFL channel precisely for the next TV rights deal.

I'm more interested in Telstra, potentially ESPN and how the internet rights will be shaped. It'll be the first time it's included in the deal.

As for the rest, we will get live footy, the AFL have made that clear. We just need better coverage in the northern states, it's atrocious at the moment. Two new teams in NSW/QLD should convince TV networks to give us a better deal up there.

2 games each 7, 9 and 10 - can use digital channels for one game in low ratings areas

3 on foxtel

Wont happen but it'd be nice

Why dont you guys add dollars to your dreams, e.g if the AFL were to demand this schedule it would increase/reduce the value of AFL footy by x%.
Forget an increase, just an estimate of how much you would devalue the rights by !!

All games live on FTA utilising their digital channels.

I can dream...
Friday Night Game - Live on Nine HD
Saturday Arvo 1 - Live on One HD
Saturday Arvo 2 - Live on Seven HD
Saturday Twilight - Live on Nine HD
Saturday Night 1 - Live on Seven HD
Saturday Night 2 - Live on One HD
Sunday Early - Live on Nine HD
Sunday Arvo - Live on Seven HD
Sunday Twilight - Live on One HD

Obviously, the networks wouldn't like AFL going head to head with other AFL
One HD already do two games on a Saturday, so they have the staff to do so
Seven would have to employ another round of commentators
Nine have the people to do so

Not to mention that many would come from Fox, if FTA got all footy
Wont happen though :(

Current rights value $780 k, this suggestion $7.80 for the full term .. HD value $0.78

I don't quite understand why you're so keen to talk down the value of the AFL TV rights over and over.

Which ever way you cut it up, they will be well above $780 mill.

Might be a 10% increase.
Might be a 20% increase.
Might be a 30% increase.

Looks good to me. Foxtel is a waste of money without the last proviso.

The Vic view dominates this forum & I'm putting a contrary view as clearly (to me) the NRL have got the short straw last time thru & Kerry Packer made sure 7 had to pay full value despite the last rights clause.

As this forum is dominated by the Vic view, I'll continue to ensure the NRL view gets a gig .. this time the AFL are unlikely to get any help from Mr Packer & the NRL have the 9 network with last rights.

Clearly its an issue I enjoy, the moving parts, excluding the good Senator Conroy representing the State of Victoria, he's almost comatose .. the MHR from down Werribee to the rescue !!! Extract the digit Conroy (aka pull your finger out), the AFL & the NRL need to do a bit of horse trading !!

I actually have some sympathy with the view that the NRL may have undersold their rights, although I doubt it's as much as the NRL fans make out.

Put another way, the $500 mill received from the joint bid of Nine/Fox was meant to have represented a high point at that time, and yet five years later, all the parties were at it again to bid it up to $780 mill.

Many have tried to put this down again to a one off windfall gain, many even use the word "luck", but the history does seem to show a willingness for the networks to pay over the odds for the AFL rights - so at some point we have to start accepting that the market knows what it wants to pay.

as i live in perth all i can comment on is how id like it to happen in WA.

the only way perth will ever get live footy on friday and saturday nights is if those games are on foxtel.

at the moment even if a WA team is playing friday is still delayed by 4 hrs.

its unwatchable.

id like all games to go live on foxtel and allow fta to show their usual delayed shit when they want.

get seven out of football altogether would be another forward step.

My work takes me often to Sydney and Canberra, where incredibly, you get the Friday night match live on Main Event on Fox Sports, and let me tell you - it's fantastic!!

This is all I'm concerned about... sick of seeing the same game on two channels, whilst we miss out on games, IE Saturday's Cats-Hawks game as a case in point.

Anyone but 9
Will never see a game up here in Qld,until the NRL finishes.

Ultimate would be all games live on ABC no commercials
