He bowls that 127-130kph speed range that hoops with the Duke over there. Watto used to be able to make it talk at that speed, so do a dozen county quicks. Anderson also in his latter years.

62 wickets @ 26 at that speed in the Shield is nothing to be sneezed at.

He's taken 20 wickets @ 21 with a 46 SR this season.

The fact he's also averaging nearly 30 with the bat with 2 tons, he's a bit of a left field watch for me down the track.

He will never get picked for an Australian debut in Australia as a specialist bowler with those speed, unless he can start averaging 35+ with the bat, however, if he does a few stints in England and takes piles of wickets, he may be a swing bowling 4th option imo over there for away tours in England, New Zealand and South Africa imo.

I feel like he's a long way from being international quality.
Sutherland is a far superior player.

Sutherland is definitely the better bowler.

And Edwards is the far superior batsman.

Sutherland needs to get picked as specialist bowler. He's not an all rounder, he probably bats behind both Starc and Cummins hypothetically tbh.

Edwards definitely has all-around potential in the same way Webster has progressed in domestic cricket if he can improve his batting by 20%.

I was merely talking about England away, I think his game is really suited to the English domestic scene. Where his bowling might be more of a weapon. I don't think it's test standard, particularly at home, despite his numbers in the Shield.

Pretty much the prototypical Aussie fast bowler of the last 25 years is 6"4-6"6 and relies on bounce and seam movement.

The skiddy express quicks are always the most freightful.

His action and load into the crease, coupled with his height and bowling speed at 19 reminds me a lot of Dale Steyn.

Both Steyn and Malcolm Marshall were both around the 5'10-5'11 mark.


If he can perform in the Shield, his emergence will be well timed with the ages of Starc and Hazlewood imo.

I saw someone else mention it, but Jye Richardson. Less so now since his injuries but prior to his shoulder problems he was touching the high 140s regularly, it was a while ago but I'm fairly sure he was over 150 on occasion when really cranked up.

I think the conversation around him needs to change. When in the Australian set up and so far through the BBL all the talk from coaches/team mates has been more or less "We're not going to ask him to reign it in, we want him to go as hard as he can from ball 1 because that's the way he plays best"

That needs to change. It's clearly not working, he needs to learn how to build into an innings. It's amazing that he has the power and ability to clear any boundary by 20 metres, but trying to do that from ball 1 has never worked for anyone regularly except perhaps Chris Gayle, and there's a reason that he's the best short form hitter the game has ever seen.

If the broader set up of CA wants him to succeed and reach his potential someone actually needs to tell him to bring it in a bit and not try to hit the ball out of the stadium from ball 1. Just backing in his blind slogging won't work for anything.

Those days are gone, very few coaches in these set ups tell hard truths, its just the way it is. Very few of these “extreme talent” kids have ever been told no

Yep, I'd be happy to see either of them get a good run. Max has always had all the natural talent in the world but I think been front and centre for all to see in the BBL world from 18 or so took a bit a toll on him. Definitely seems to have matured a lot in recent years and the move to the middle order definitely seems to be doing him a world of good. Still only 25 so plenty of time for him.
 
A good point raised by Chuck Berry on the use of the Wanga/ dog stick this morning on SEN. Creating issues with footwork due to its heavy use and unnatural nature.

Growing up it was always about the 2 main movements with the feet which led to front foot defence and back foot defence. Everything else blossomed if you got those basics right. Now the basics are almost dead.

What was his point with the sidearm specifically? If used properly it should be ok and just saves your shoulder - i don’t use a lot of it but I thought it’d be better than a bowling machine because you still have to follow the cues

Main point was that it took away from players watching the ball out of the hand and it comes out from an unnatural height

The gap from wrist to ball is what causes the problem IMO. Makes reading length difficult.

Which is why the footwork is declining.
 
I've also heard the view that coaches using the sidearm means batsmen no longer are required to bowl as much in the nets so we've seen a decline in the batsman who can bowl a bit e.g. M Waugh, Katich, Sehwag etc.

or more batsmen are sticking to their primary skill regardless?

Keen to see how Jem Ryan goes. Playing some good cricket at grade level in QLD over the last few seasons.
