These 'serious origins' were that US theatres and movie studios would not employ African Americans, but to portray them they would get white actors to don face paint. Eg Al Jolson. This effectively represented employment discrimination.

How this has the same in context in 21st century Australia staggers me. Why are people melting down over this? Why is this even news?

I agree - I'm one of the first who would generally be painted by others as a lefty social justice warrior but I just fail to see how this is even an issue. The kid was dressing up as his hero, I guess next time he should just go as Matt Priddis

Can someone (preferably someone who's angry about this) please explain why this is cool?

- genuine question

Edit: he was actually nominated for the best supporting actor Oscar..

The kid idolises his football playing ability which has nothing to do with the colour of his skin.
If you buy a NicNat jumper do you paint your face black when you wear your NicNat jumper to a game?

He was dressing up for a costume parade where the intention is to dress up as someone in particular, he wasn't going to a football match to watch a game.

By black people you mean black Americans, right?

I may be wrong, but Nic Nat is neither black, nor American. Is he?
Like I said, do some reading. That will answer your questions.

The more general point is that most people - including this women - know it's offensive to a lot of people.

So she chose to do something she knew was offensive simply because she wanted to live vicariously through her kid (& an excuse to start drinking before midday).

The issue isn't whether black face is offensive & why, the issue is this mother choosing to use her son to do something she knew was racially offensive to others.

Why would anyone defend that?

Are you actually? Because you just definitively claimed that the origins of the controversy over blackface was in a labour dispute.

Which makes me think you're not entirely across the issue.
The minstrel show was one aspect of blackface. There was also the fact it denied African Americans the right to work as entertainers. Took years for them to be accepted on the same level of US actors (Sidney Poitier etc)

Furthermore, minstrel show blackface is a caricature like the 'golliwog'. How is dressing up like Naitanui representative of that?

And across what issue? The appropriation of American taboos? Are we going to start saying 'darn' and 'shoot soon?

How come Rober Downey Jr didn't get slammed for wearing black face in tropic thunder? I think he even got nominated for an Oscar..?

Its fiction. Anything goes. Game of Thrones has women being r*ped. Movies are full of murder, offensive jokes about all sorts of things religion, race, appearance.

It doesnt mean its acceptable in real life.

Agree with it or not, you'd have to be living under a rock not to know the stigma attached to blackface. So why do it? But I will give this lady the benefit of the doubt and assume she is just ignorant.

EDIT: Just saw her Facebook post. I take back what I said. Celebrating with a wine before midday sums it up nicely.

Reading her tweet she knew what she was doing good on her , why is She ignorant she couldn't of possibly known she was going to outrage the white folk of Bigfooty.

Why is this movie always brought up in discussions about blackface? It's a one off example that got panned across the board and bears no cultural significance.

Probably because it's the most well known example of 'whiteface' makeup. I'll give you a few more off the top of my head though.

Josephine Baker
Ike & Tina Turner
Eddie Murphy

Huh? But he still did it? Just like this kid did- he doesn't actually look like that, but he dressed up as a character for a day, just like Robery Downey Jr..?
Neither were taking the piss out of black people- they just wanted to look like the character they were portraying?

The Facebook post gives this some context. The parent was told not to do it and why it could be a bad idea, but then went ahead with it anyway. Ignorance at best. Should not be defended. The poor grammar and morning wine would suggest another stupid bogan at work.
Another bogan football will have to help educate.

Always good to see the bien pensants replace their race hatred with class hatred.

The above would have been racists when it was acceptable to do so.

So even Nic Nat wasn't aware of why it's offensive in the past, but people have now taught him to be offended by it? The kid clearly meant no harm. We should leave this taboo for American's to get upset over, Aussies don't have a history of oppressing Fijians.

Besides, blackface had a unique sort of style to it (dark black shoe polish colour with a large emphasis on the lips). The kid dressed as Nic Nat isn't really in blackface.

Good post, for those who don't understand the background, this should give some idea of why it's not on in the USA. It's not just about appearing black, it was about white people lampooning black people and making them out to be buffoons.

Hence the sensitivity, even if you are not adding all the other stuff that goes along with Blackface.

Historically, there have been plenty of instances of dark make up being used by white actors, such Lawrence Olivier, where there was no "piss taking" at all. It is kind of a shame that we can't legitimately use it in a tasteful way any more because of the wrongs of the past, but that is the reality.

Sounds fairly innocent, Naitanui has a point that the solution is better education on the subject. Hope this doesn't turn into a shitshow like the Eddie Betts incident
Where do you think you are?

The funny thing about that movie is his most famous line actually uses a word that is now considered offensive and is even blocked on this site.

"You went full ****** man. Never go full ******"

This was not a racist action by the boy or his mother.
You could argue it was insensitive by the mother.

Its a sad day when a young kid can't dress up like his hero for a fancy dress day.

The modern times we live in hey.
It was the age of wisdom. It was the age of foolishness.
It was the epoch of beleif, it was the epoch of incredulity

Agreed. This really should subside because there's no intentional racism at all - the kid was dressing up as their personal hero! However, I guess Naitanui, knowing how racism feels, would understand how some people may feel about this and thinks that others need education on the subject. Fair enough.
