Bays lel who would've figured
Have you ever stopped to consider a possible future where your club stayed loyal.to the SANFL as Norwood ultimately did. Working to reform it from inside? Yes the VFL/AFL entry would would probably have been slower, but better organised. Without that schism it's also possible the SANFL would accept and be committed to a role and responsibility for developing young players destined for an AFL career.
I concede the nightmare possibility the AFL might have acted on it's own to create an entity in Adelaide that could waive money at the best players, but it would have been a lot more difficult without Port's collusion.

My God. This shows absolutely no understanding of how it was heading. Absolutely none. Working for reform from the inside? Lol. SA were on the outer. WA had already jumped. There was never going to be fair representation. Any rate Port are in, as they should be. Norwood are now virtually irrelevant. I know which camp I'd rather be in.

Clearly you didn't consider what I said, pity. WA jumped of their own accord, without being pushed. Totally different scenario. It was inevitable that there would be an SA team enter but the way it was done certainly wasn't.

I'm a Sturt fan, really dislike the Maggies, but supported Port's push into the AFL. It might have been arrogant, and a touch duplicitous, but the guys that were running the SANFL at the time had some outdated idea that footy in this state could continue to thrive without a SA presence in the national league. Port's push just forced their hand.
The SANFL administration were doing what its members wanted. There were numerous surveys at the time, and the overall consensus from SANFL members was to retain the status quo. There was minimal desire to join an expanded VFL. A new NFL, with a more equatable representation from each state would have gained a lot more traction.

Without re-opening old wounds, but if WA and Port had stayed united, the outcome would have been very different.

Port were smart enough to recognise the VFL was the strongest competition, and that the longer SA didn't have a place at the table the more the game would suffer. The Footy Park member in the early 90s was a particular parochial version of god's waiting room, if the SANFL had waited for their approval, they'd still be squabbling about getting into bed with the dreaded Vics.

It's a fair critique of what I said, and a valid point of view. It comes down to how mich the largest club in tje league would have been capable of instigating change. I frankly dont know enough about the politics so will defer to others.

You wouldnt have to be a brain surgeon to work that out, biggest population state that has AFL as its main sport, there werent too many alternatives were there. The VFL had to create the new league being the AFL. It has done so now we see the expansion to the bigger populated states, if it comes off and the northern states adopt the gane, the demographics of who has the most power over football will change again.

As for the WAFL and SANFL , NEAFL , VFL they will be leaugues to themselves no diffrent than the amatuers and other leagues throughout Australia

So with the VFL now taking a step down in teh scheme of things

I believe the SANFL is a stronger league and develops way more talent than the VFL!
Not disputing what you said. It is the case though thst we are in the NEFL to give games to our reserves and develop them. A past coach said openly we are not in the NEAFL to win it. Seems everyone acccepts this so there isn't the angst there is with the tradition of the SANFL.

It seem he has a more accurate perspective than most Port (the SANFL is Shit) flogs like yourself.

It is?

Whenever people trot this out, it gives me the shits. If people didn't want AFL football and preferred the state league, then why did the Crows take off like they did whilst the SANFL's attendance dropped in huge numbers once AFL football was introduced? I'd say the SANFL flogs who all hopped onto the Crows and left their old clubs in the dust did more to harm the SANFL then Port ever did.

"nope all ports fault ur the bad guis port paer china wa wa wa".

I thought my posts in this thread were pretty balanced.
