Aren't all AFL players these days private school knobheads too? They're certainly rich. The umpires don't get paid much. Most of them probably work as janitors and bricklayers during the week.
The AFL executive has a disproportionate amount who were involved in VAFA, not country footy or suburban or even the old VFA. There is a different mindset coming from that realm. I always thought AFL had a better balance than the two rugby’s that have two different classes of players and supporters from each other. We are best when we are balanced, we seem all the one way at the moment.

Yet another example of the LNP taking a shit on the working class

A soft helmet…’head guard’ is maybe a better term, like Caleb’s, is absolutely better than nothing. You’re talking shite.

Your American football comparison is a complete red herring as the helmet actually encourages head contact, where it would not in AFL.

Cricket helmets. Without doing any research I’d imagine that concussions are more reported since the helmet came into play, rather than actually being more prevalent. Aside from offering a bigger area to hit and perhaps obscuring view, helmets would have next to no negative impact.

Maybe ‘assumed protection’ is another negative.

All things considered, if you are going to get whacked over the head a helmet is definitely preferential. Fancy testing it out?
You are talking shite.

From Why Wear a Helmet If It Can't Prevent Concussions? (for Teens) - Nemours KidsHealth

Here's why people wear helmets when biking, skiing, or doing other activities that can lead to head injuries: Helmets are a way to help protect your head from injuries like cuts and skull fractures. Always wear a helmet when doing any sport or activity where there's a chance you might hit your head against something like a tree, the ground, or another person.

Your friend is right: No helmet can prevent concussions. There's no way to keep the brain from moving inside the skull. If you hit your head hard enough, your brain can bang into the hard bone and cause a concussion.

Some "special" sports helmets and other new products claim that they can protect you from concussions. But studies don't back up these claims. As long as a helmet is right for your sport, hasn't been damaged, and is approved by the sport's governing body, it really doesn't matter how much it costs or how fancy it is.

Concussions aren't always preventable. But you can avoid other serious problems by taking care of yourself if you get one. If you take a hit to the head while playing sports, sit out the rest of the game and get advice from your doctor.

I'm glad you fix garage door openers and don't make policy. I won't need your services, I can fix my own door opener.

After a bit of reading I will concede that there is truth in what you’re saying. A helmet does not do much in terms of preventing rapid head movement causing concussion. However I still think NFL and Cricket are bad examples as head injuries in these sports are often impact related, which helmets do help protect you from.

But I apologise, you were not talking shite. I think I disagreed with everything you wrote in the Covid thread and assumed you were an idiot.

Give me a shout when you’ve fixed your garage door and I’ll come fix it again for you.

Yeah I thought this was common knowledge now to be honest.

Do people realllly think the concussion prone players wouldn’t try a helmet if it had even 0.1% advantage - like honestly, with alllllll the docs & sports scientists involved, they wouldn’t have come with the very obvious solution of a helmet - yet not one of those players has tried it except for maybe Brayshaw but I can’t remember why he’s started wearing one.

Like you said concussion is brain hitting the skull, helmet does zero to prevent this

22-13 free kicks Essendon’s way.

Free kick Essendon, corruption, conspiracies, fixed etc al
If it were Sydney on the receiving end they'd be screaming bloody murder.

It's funny because I thought Collingwood definitely got the rub of the green overall. Although still not enough to decide the game - I actually think Essendon might be worse than West Coast

I have been thinking, is this rugby Union type situation we want with our umpires, come from the fact that the VAFA mafia of private school type knob heads that run the AFL today, putting their class consciousness on to us mere working class peasants in this supposedly game for all classes?
Rugby Union's an odd game, it derives from a game played at an English Public School where the soil was soft and muddy so tackling was OK. Soccer derived from a game played at Sheffield Public School where the ground is more flinty. If you've ever played Union, even. at the level I have, you'd be bewildered why anyone schooled in Aus Rules would bother. On our list are former students of St Kevins, Xavier, Haileybury, Marcellin, Whitefriars. Scotch Is all it takes to avoid a 50 metres penalty is to call an umpire Sir ?

We'll see. Draper will annihilate anyone we have to put in the ruck next week, then their mids will be off to the races. Decent chance Essendon are front and centre in the media aim this week, they then beat the dogs who go to 2-5 and take their place as the punching bag.

Not that it wouldn't be somewhat warranted, but it'll still be annoying as hell.

I feel I do a pretty good job of being able to enjoy footy even when we're shit, but even I have my limits. Losing to Essendon this week would just about have me done with footy until trade period

I only wish him well. Do you get the sense this article is to retrieve some pride since losing Treloar.
I hope he plays 100 games for the Pies but the coverage his move is getting is laughable at this point. He has basically been the same player for Collingwood that he was for us and hasn’t come close to replicating the awesome game he had v. St.Kilda in round 1. And that’s fine, he is still a good player but you would think we gave up prime Chris Judd for a pick in the low 40s.

Also so good seeing Essendon lose again. I won’t be smiling if they beat us of course but they are such a rabble of a club. Good to see Darcy Parish not get rewarded for his is seagull effort and another meaningless medal. Reminds me of last year when he had 45 v. Geelong but they lost by 10 goals and he still got best on.

How about the ANZAC Day medallist getting a seat alongside McRae at the post match press conference. I don't think it's done for any other game than when they stick the Norm Smith medallist there after the Grand Final.

Do they get extra Brownlow votes too for the occasion too? 3 just doesn't seem enough.

Someone came in swinging calling out another poster for talking shit about a pretty well known subject - he deserves to be made to feel like an idiot tbh

You are a true ornament of the game if you win an ANZAC Day medal, just ask the possum Mark McGough!

It’s just always amusing to me.

Football supporters thinking that free kicks are some sort of charity to be distributed evenly.

Apparently umpires should be out there thinking along the lines of this,

”That was a clear high tackle against Buddy Franklin. Sydney have made a few errant tackles today, we’ve had to pay a few against them for it. But Sydney have only received 5 free kicks so far and the opposition have 13 free kicks, so I’ll let this one against Franklin go and hopefully Sydney can earn a few later this quarter so it evens up a bit.

Even if say they make another 5 blatantly high tackles, that will make the free kick count 18-5 against them, and that’s way too much, so we won’t pay them.”

Completely laughable.

I watched the game today. Essendon got more free kicks and the umpiring was completely fine. Collingwood weren’t robbed, there was no conspiracy, the umpires weren‘t secretly barracking for Essendon to win, just over the course of the game, they won more free kicks.

The sooner people shit up about the amount of free kicks paid and realise that in any game, one side can infringe more than the other, the better.
