I reckon there's a correlation between defensive heavy coaching and losing close games. Haven't looked it up or anything but my feeling is when teams look to restrict scoring they are more susceptible to momentum shifts and being run over

Makes sense.

Defensive style relies heavily on structure and predictable play.

Break through that and the defensive side struggles to adjust. By the time they do it is too late.
