It's not a lie if you believe it.

This is a very good recent podcast Dan Gorringe did that goes into some very serious mental health battles he had during footy and after it finished (went very close to a suicide), it's certainly not a glamorous lifestyle for everyone that goes through the system:

We missed a bullet on him but next pick we chose Chayce Jones.

2018 draft Tarryn Thomas Next Gen. Academy (Indigenous) - North matched Crows bid.
I am happy we have people like Chayce Jones on our list and not people like Tarryn Thomas, regardless of talent. This type of behaviour towards women by famous sports people like AFL footballers has been swept under the carpet for too long; by the competition itself, clubs and media.

At least Carey is out of the media now, but he shouldn't have been near the media given his history. They also recently removed someone from the HoF for some very serious sexual assault crimes. Lets just hope the AFL finally make a stand here and ban Thomas for life, enough is enough.

Chayce has his knockers on here, but he has been (so far) a perfect example of a good honest kid at the AFC and reasonable footballer.

If someone called you something offensive, you told him it wasn’t on, he apologizes, you shake hands and move on… isn’t that the ideal scenario for all involved?

Do you need an authority stepping in to issue a punitive punishment?

We are treating words like physical assault, and they are not the same thing.

I think there are two different arguments you're advancing, and ones better than the other.

The first is that the AFL ought not regulate the spoken word, and it ought be self regulated amongst players. That would place spoken word in a unique category: the AFL regulates most matters from what can be worn, to what can be chemically in players bodies, to conduct. I don't see a good argument for exceptionalism.

The second is that these matters should not not result in arbitrary punishments, or punishments wholly disproportionate to the gravity of the conduct. Reasonable people might disagree on the gravity of a particular case and the sanction, but I think the overall argument is important. Disproportionate sentences because of a corporate desire to reflect commercially desirable attributes is a dangerous principle.

I mean, societally this is why sentencing has been left to the independent judiciary: to avoid popularist political interference.

This is why my life is better following the SANFL more than AFL, go to a game with mates, enjoy it, go home, go again next week. In between there’s no bullshit arguments about premiership rings, who called who what and and every other bit of pointless gossip that has no affect of your life at all yet apparently is of the utmost importance.
You can enjoy the AFL the same way if you don't partake in media and even ignore this place.

I personally consume very little AFL Footy media. FiveAA sports show every few days is about it. Plus snippets that pop up on my Social media feeds

And this place.

Still enjoy watching the actual game and probably watch more actual games now than when I was Footy media fatigued during the week.

Most Footy media is made up opinion pieces geared towards generating click bait and "discussion".

I guess that is mainstream media as a whole in this era.

AFL is a heavily comprised league, geared towards peripheral entertainment. Having said that the core product I still enjoy.

100% disagree.

I want really good footballers at the club. There are plenty of nice footballers and good citizens in the world - very few really good footballers.

First — kudos on being able to actually comprehend the argument.

I do regard speech as exceptional. This was an uncontroversial take up until very recently.

I’m also fully aware that approach allows for that rare occasion when someone stoops way too low.

But I firmly believe the upsides outweigh the downsides, not only in a sporting context, but a societal one too.

The second is that these matters should not not result in arbitrary punishments

The reality is these matters can only ever result in arbitrary punishments, which is partly why I hold the above position.

How do you make the punishments non-arbitrary? A grading system with a list of naughty words and slurs?

Taken to its logical conclusion this all very quickly descends into the absurd.

I’d argue we’re already there.

Chayce has his knockers on here, but he has been (so far) a perfect example of a good honest kid at the AFC and reasonable footballer.

Would rather him be a dick and a better footballer personally.

There's about another 20 just like him on our list and another 100 good guy / reasonable footballers at VFL/SANFL level.

Very astute appointment.

There's been a strong tradition of the Government not being able to regulate speech to varying degrees. Private bodies, not so sure.

People were being blacklisted in Hollywood for talking about communism 70 years ago. People were burned at the stake for expressing different religious views. But those were on behalf of the groups in power, not the marginalised.

Thomas just seems like a genuine piece of shit though. It's hard to see him getting back on a list now, and if he does, he will get booed, which will open another can of worms.
