Umpire involved in the betting scandal has been named - Michael Pell

Can’t say I’ve heard of him, like most umpires

Sounds like he’s told a mate(s) who got votes in games he umpired and they’ve collected on spot bets

Came to light after one betting agency noticed that one punter was always winning on bets he was placing.

Went to the AFL who then contacted other agencies who found the same irregularities

Common denominator in the games was Pell

Someone is going to jail

Its funny how this shit can land you serious jail time compared to manslaughter.

When you consider that the only ones losing out here are betting companies and in all likelihood the losses are probably relatively small it’ll be interesting to see what penalty gets gets

Crazy to think they'd get away with it.

People wouldn't be able to resist putting a fair chunk on when they know the result. It would stand out so much.

One results in the death of a human, the other results in the loss of a few grand from companies making billions in profits largely at the expense of gambling addicts. So that should count for something too I guess.
If I've learned anything about how the world works then I predict they're gonna get the book thrown at them for this

I don't really bet and know nothing about this. Is fixing betting specifically illegal or have they broken some other laws?

Betting companies pretty much rig their side of the game, it's only fair that punters can get on it too.

"A 32-year-old man from Glenroy was arrested in relation to the offence of engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome, and is expected to be charged.

"A second 32-year-old Glenroy man and a 27-year-old man from Drouin were interviewed in relation to the offence of using corrupt conduct information for betting purposes."

The maximum penalty for manslaughter is life imprisonment.
I think it’s more the irony that someone can get pinned for cheating the system (fair enough) but these betting companies will constantly void bets on coincidental technicalities and cheat the system themselves.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if spot fixing was rife throughout the comp, not necessarily entire matches, but with the amount of money that’s at stake and the close partnerships they all have with the AFL there simply has to be right?

It's in every major sport somewhere.
You'd be extremely naive to think otherwise.

Fixing for the purposes of betting is specifically illegal. Match fixing or contriving an outcome for the purposes of betting has resulted in a lot of bans. Criminal convictions are harder to get so it happens less often. I.e. the effort required is often thought of as not worth the effort by the authorities.
Think Salim Malik for example.

But that's not what was happening here (apparently). This was just letting some people know the uncorrupted Brownlow votes. That's not fixing. If the umpire had given 3 votes to a spud and then told his mates, that's fixing. Or got his mate to bet on player X getting the first free and then making sure it happened. That's fixing.

And like you I have no love for the companies. Betting, and especially spread betting and event (first goal, first free, first wide, first yellow card etc.) betting are blights on sport.

Thanks - that makes sense.

AFL - WE'LL TAKE ANY AND ALL BETTING SPONSORS

AFL when one of it's employees gets caught up in a betting scandal.

This shit is super strict and is followed closely with regulators, there is no betting company that purposely does this I promise you lest they lose their license.

If you're betting with a 'bonus bet' then its an entirely different matter tho

Or they just put clauses like "we reserve the right to correct any obvious or manifest errors and to void any bets where such has occurred" into their terms and conditions and try and get away with it. Then, should the regulator disagree they're directed to pay the bets they should have had to anyone with no punitive damages added on.

Who has lost their licence?

Yeah, having worked at 2 casinos, the regulars simply slap gambling providers with fines whenever there's a breach.

Who on earth would remove such a steady stream of income into government coffers by revoking a licence?

Here is the legislation I believe they have been charged under:

Based on reporting, the highlighted is what Pell appears to be exposed to/is relevant (I have highlighted the final section to show that the bet doesn't even need to be made).

The actual punters are probably exposed to the whole of the section.
