I don't know how the AFL makes the game safe from head high contact.

To remove even a small portion of the type of actions that can inadvertently lead to head high contact would fundamentally change the game.
Indeed. The players need to accept some liability if they want to play the game

I’d start with parents. If you’re going to introduce your kid to a sport, explain to your kid the dangers.

Now a 5 year old probably won’t understand or even hear most of what you say, but as a parent, you take ownership of the dangers you expose your kid/s to.

Is there any current agreement in place with responsibility taken for injuries (head, body etc..)?
Surely they'll have to bring in something where the players accept x amount of responsibility?
Or are the afl wide open to continually being sued?
As is blatantly obvious, I know fa about this type of stuff!

AFL need to upgrade to leather.

Harder wearing than suede

Several comments mentioned club doctors withholding information from Picken.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Possibly a similar thing to buying a ticket to a motor racing event that provides the event organisers and participants some sort of indemnity in the event of the spectator suffering death or injury at the event but there are limitations to this protection further up the legal food chain around negligence etc if I understand that model.

I think they do, but the issue has been more the balance of liability - rather than players wanting a complete exemption from any responsibility for injury.

Clubs, and the AFL, have a natural conflict of interest to have the best players on the ground at all times. This, but extension, has meant that coaches and club hierarchies over time have applied pressure to the club employed medical specialists, essentially influencing decisions that should have gone a different way (either in-game, or on player availability for future games).

It's better now than it was, but certainly not 100%. I don't think the brain scanning of draftees as standard practice is in place yet (which could then give both a reference point for future concussion scans, and also potentially give insight into possible issues if a player has had concussions as a junior).

There will always be some concussions in AFL, but minimising it - and then most importantly treating each case individually and with health as the only desired outcome is the point that everyone should be looking to get to (it's better than it was, but still a work in progress).

Withholding the information is crazy (and telling the player they're ok to play) and downright irresponsible from a health and liability perspective if true. Not true informed consent in terms of Picken choosing, and accepting liability for, going back out to play. Could be costly for the AFL/Bulldogs (or their insurers).

Should be able to wear it whenever they want in games not featuring Collingwood. It’s embarrassing it’s gotten this far as a talkback headline grabbing issue.

Premier League fans manage just fine with about 60000 teams in variations of red and white. Half the NBA plays in red, white and blue. Get over it Eddie, most Pies fans don’t even give a shit.

Good on them. Every Showdown next. Then every game in SA. Then every non Collingwood game.

Victorian fans are way too old fashioned with it's attachment to jumper traditions.

They seem to think if their team isn't wearing something resembling their home strip they will lose their identity.

Kudos to Richmond for wearing their alternate strip in the 2017 grand final and not bowing to tradition. Now their fans love it since it forged its own history.

Probably an unpopular one here but I don't think Brisbane should wear their Fitzroy getup when they play in Melbourne (if they still do?).
They're not Fitzroy anymore, embrace being Brisbane.

They were a merger though, otherwise they should just rebrand themselves back to being the Bears.

Sydney still honours their heritage with SMFC on the back of their jumpers.

Still a lot of Fitzroy fans who support the Lions in Melbourne, the scenes in the semi v Melbourne were great.

Plus the Fitzroy kit is one of the best jumpers in the league.

That's the thin edge of the wedge that Eddie has always been afraid of. Foot in the door then eventually get the whole body through.

But I agree that that's how it should be. No fan of Port. Almost as detestable as Freo, but they should be able to wear it.

As you point out. Every European soccer league has multiple (usually three) kits for the season. Home, away and alternate away. The NBA, and so on can manage. Why not the AFL?

Tradition... Well Vic Tradition

I don't get this pining for "poor Fitzroy " that still exists. The 90s AFL didn't go far enough in my opinion. If they'd actually merged a couple more clubs (eg melb/hawks) we'd have a much stronger comp. There would be 16 teams and only 8 in Victoria, which probably works.

Long term I still think Norf will regret not taking the cash to move to the Gold Coast or Tassie.
