I've seen the footage.

I think the ball was pretty much out of bounds and Matthews just smashed him.
It was brutal.

Looks like some of the crowd wanted to jump the fence.

Matthews was a thug, no denying it. He was also incredibly strong, had a great step, an otherworldly goal sense with skills to match and a brutal midfielder.

So basically if you combine Voss's intent, will and strength with close to Jarman level skills, Daicos goal sense, Pendlebury's step and Ablett Snr's level of being a thug you pretty much have him summed up.
