I don't think it's a fallacy tbh

'22 - YES - Geelong (Cameron)
'21 - YES - Melbourne (May, Lever, Brown)
'20 - YES - Richmond (Lynch)
'19 - " "
'18 - NO
'17 - YES - Richmond
'16 - YES - Bulldogs (Tom Boyd)
'15 - YES - Hawthorn (Frawley, Lake, Gibson)

I think if you're going to bring in a player to top off a list your best chances are with a KPP.
Who from Richmond in 2017?

Not sure it’s that simple to be honest. Basically every team in the comp will have traded in a KPP at some stage, so of course you can pick out examples in premiership sides like you have above. Bit of correlation/causation action.

But there are just as many examples of KPPs traded in (with hype and expectation) that don’t work out.

Tarrant, Croad, Anthony, Gumby, McCarthy, Lobb, Hogan - just Freo alone provides plenty of examples.

Not denying trades are a key part to a flag push.

Richmond in 2017 already had a triple Coleman medallist playing for them. They didn't need to get another KPF, but it clearly didn't hurt.

If Adelaide had added Pavlich in 2004/2005/2006, they'd have at least another flag to their name. The lack of a KPF has hurt Fremantle's chances post-Pavlich.

That's not to say that we need one, or need one right now. But some teams have benefited from it. It's about assessing your list more than making a blanket statement.

Blanket statements are more fun to post though.

Lynch didn’t join Richmond until 2019, which is why I queried the supposed YES next to 2017.

If WC added Bontempelli in 2019/2020 we might have another flag to our name.

Nothing flops harder than a failed KPP trade though

Uhhh ruck superstar Nankervis hellllo 🙄 😉

But no I was lazy there. I don't think you can count a journeyman ruck as a big KPP acquisition.

I agree re failed acquisitions (although Hogan is really the only big 'proven' acquisition there) but think that's more about the right player and timing a list build.

My point being that if you are going to go after a big fish and spend big to complete a list build it should be a KPP and specifically a key forward or defender - bringing rucks on big money is a mistake.

They allow you to completely change your style of play and are much more valuable structurally than even the best mids.
