I haven't paid much attention to All-Australian team for several years now, but it seems like a pretty flawed process.
A panel selects their best 40 players regardless of position, with the top 40 names based on a points system being named 'the squad'. From that 40, you then need to pick the best 'team regardless of whether there's enough players of a certain position to actually fill it. With the bias towards ball winning mids and dominate forwards for a lot of people, it seems you'll always end up with a very unbalanced side.

Do the panelists have to list their squad and team selections anywhere? Would be interesting to see how they all view the game/players

HPN did one based on some metrics they've created and using believable team positions, you end up with the below;

Dan Butler was the best small forward by a country mile yet they choose to play 3 midfielders forward instead? What a joke.

Danger, Martin and Bontempelli are all AA forwards. Is this just so they can squeeze extra mids into the side or what?

It seems to be based on how they arrive at the squad.
I would have thought it would make more sense for each panelist to select their top 3-5 per position based on a 'standard position description' and the player who ends up with the most votes at that position is the AA. This way you could also have a 2nd AA team comprised of all the runner ups and you'd get a feel for the top 5 at each position.
you could also have the 1st AA side play the 2nd one in an exhibition match...

This is where All Australian is silly. McCluggage gets picked in 40 man squad ahead of McGrath because he’s a winger..fair enough...but then a midfielder is selected on the wing anyway!
exactly.
There is a bit of a disjoint in the squad selections and the method of getting the final team done
A good first step would be removing the buffoon votes (Same applies for RS....how was rankine 3rd??!!!)

Get the opposition analysts to vote on this. they'd have a far greater appreciation for players in their roles.

Ben Reid retires has there ever been a worse pair of brothers in the AFL
The Houlihans, Lonie brothers, the pair were good footballers

Jackson and Zachary Merrett?

Darcy and Joe Daniher?

Both Reid boys are talented, just not durable. Same with the Brown twins.
Zach saves that

Joe Daniher probably saves that but maybe second

Just made of glass and earned fat pay cheques

I dont really remember the Lonie vrothes

Being unlucky with injury and shit are two different things.

Both Reid brothers are above average when fit with a lot of talent.

I'd suggest at the very least Melbourne think the Wagner brothers are worse.
