Yeah U18s is a mess generally, as are the state leagues. It’s all cobbled together from independent pieces with contrasting needs, bent to the will of the commission. To hell with the country kids that couldn’t get a scholarship, or the regional/remote/interstate kids flat out getting in front of recruiters at all, unless they’re in the NGAs.

Is this where they could do club zoning to get more country kids access?
If there were concerns over rich clubs and fights over zone borders could you do like a pool model where groups of clubs are in charge of their own areas and when it came time to draft would bid among themselves

Country Victoria kids generally do get a bit of exposure through NAB League (through the five country-based clubs) and the U18 Champs (Vic Country specifically only has kids from those areas). Those clubs tend to be well-connected with club-recruiters so kids that deserve to be heard of tend to be heard of. The Riverina is attached to GWS as well for their academy, and SA/WA have their own processes with their SANFL and WAFL systems respectively.

It's just that as andleanback said they put the NAB League (statewide U18s comp formerly known as TAC Cup) on hold so that the APS kids who also play for the NAB League metropolitan clubs can play for their schools instead, meaning those kids get more exposure than their country-based counterparts.

There's also the AGS comps and Herald Sun Shield now as well (plus VFL for the mature agers, like Nick Hind).

I'm by no means an expert haha, it's more of andleanback, eDPS' area. But yeah, there's lots of moving parts, different comps, lots of games. You can see how investing in the draft and having scouts at as many games as possible is going to help your chances of finding good ones.

Well yeah.. it’d have to be enough for a first round pick, at least from GWS’ perspective. Matching is only a threat to get a better pick anyway, once you have the best one, what’s the point?

Unless it’s to get a trade with better picks, but I can’t see North parting with Pick 1 and they don’t have anything between that and about pick 9 or so (after whatever GWS gets).

Kelly on the other hand would be mad to take a pay cut to play for North right now.

If Kelly decides to leave, there is no way GWS match and pull the 'we will keep him unless you trade' schtick surely.

There would have to be a handshake agreement that if he doesnt take up his option, GWS wont match and just take the huge chunk of cap room and 1st Rd compo pick. Otherwise if he wanted to stay he just takes up the option.
Also we should realise that if he does leave, he probably leaves for a pay cut.

Could you imagine what Paul Connors (his manager) would do if GWS dupe Kelly by matching a lesser offer by Norf/Carl/Ess and threatening to make him to stay on a reduced deal than they would pay him if he had taken up his option?
Not only would he walk Kelly to the PSD, he would torch them.

Thats being said, i wouldnt put any pettiness past Jason McCartney, particularly if we end up involved.

Yep. I can't see Kelly leaving for that much less though. Like he'd still be in top 20 in the league for wages, even if he doesn't get 8.8 over 8. He'd be silly to take less than what Zach Merrett just got. That's still a significant hair cut mind you – like 4m over the life of the contract. And that's for a club that seems to finally have it's shit together. Not sure you can say the same for North – they would probably need to pay more (at least if Kelly's manager is any good...). Plus you have to factor in things like post-AFL career incentives, which could make up the difference long term.

Kelly does have some romantic ties to North though – I think his dad played there didn't he? Not enough to be a father/son, but still.

Thing is it hasn't really changed.
It was never locked in at each location. It was just the preference order and then the media reported it like it was going to happen or made assumptions.
When they turned out wrong it looks like it's been continuously shifted.

Edit- reading that back Lore didn't mean that to sound like I was having a go at you. Apologies.

I get their younger mids need the guidance of a more seasoned player, and players who hit the scoreboard, but 8mil. Really?

I'd question whether Kelly is the type to be leading a young side. Gun player without question but to get the best out of a bunch of kids you should probably place more emphasis on leadership than skill.
