True, however it's bit hard to see how a number of different people all made up the same story.

It's not a matter of having made up the story. It's the way emphasis changes over time. I see it all the time, in writing.

People are hopeless witnesses, generally. They remember the most favourable version of events. That might as well be a statement of fact.

'We were just getting on with our lives, happy as Larry" is the sort of self serving embellishment I find unconvincing.

Experience suggests there was a trigger. Granted, no trigger justifies what is being alleged but it provides a different context.

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that young kids (i.e. the players) went to the club for help that triggered a conversation? Do you want to be a father? Not what I would say but not hangable given current attitudes.

Do people then look to save face for mistakes made? Could said young kids have fled? Have said players always been faithful (almost certainly 1 has a significant wrap sheet). There was termination of a pregnancy anticipating club reaction and a miscarriage. Both tragic but is it beyond possibility that people would blame others for that to save a relationship? No judgement from me.

Now, given that there is still silence from those involved, that's becoming even more damming. I would have thought they'd have been aware of the allegations and that they'd have gathered their thoughts long ago.

Also, please don't mistake me as being able to read the ABC article without cringing the whole time. It might as well be new millennium stolen generation, as alleged.

I dont even see it as a reflection of society because where was the loophole that would allow what is alleged as being acceptable? There can be no come back from this. I'd suggest banishment but I don't believe in it because it's avoiding the truth.

That's why I'm reserving. Because it is discombobulating.

It's hard not to view these types of things through the saga prism, because it's really not about Essendon, even though, **** the hypocrite and all the rest.

But that statement is such a damming indictment on himself, in that he recognises the importance of player welfare and yet something like this happens. They are not some stupid racist joke or remark or oversight, they are not activities that take place outside the systems and protocols. They are part of the system.

It's something that is hard to apply in real time but how often is it the case that those who moralise have skeletons in the closet?

They'll release the findings, just not the report itself as it contains a lot of de-identified information given under the condition of anonymity. Which I think is reasonable.

They could release a "redacted" verion?

The independent review didn't interview Fagan. So they either didn't have the scope or the information provided in the ABC article. But it's enough to show the "review" was a similar "review" to the Collingwood one where nobody was satisfied, but "something was done".

I agree with what you've said re emphasis etc, I've seen it myself. This however is a whole level of different IMO. We're talking about some pretty traumatic stuff.

I think it's drawing a long bow to suggest that a player may have approached the club due to relationship issues causing them distress and then changed the narrative to "they took my sim, told me to break up with my partner, get rid of the kid and forced me to live with a club employee" to feel better about themselves.

I got the sense that the past players were interviewed, then the report tabled to the board who referred it to the AFL for further investigation.

Not sure the point prior to the AFL receiving it was anything more than fact-finding from past-players.

Announced on the day where we are all getting ready for a 4 day long weekend, right before the grand final. Couldn’t dream of a better m circuit breaker if you were Clarkson, Nth or the AFL.
The AFL probably would have liked to keep it out of the media for another fortnight at least if it wasn’t for Russell Jackson. I find it interesting that this is I think the fourth of his major reports that involve footy and it’s the only one the AFL has responded to. The timing is also interesting if perhaps the ABC was waiting until after Brisbane were knocked out the finals.

Just caught up on the news.

JFC!!!

Did Clarkson and Co decide to get together one day and have their own version of the Wannsee conference.

Confronting, disturbing and very sad news that's come to light.
