nothing wrong per se, but I'd argue it's not a salary dump in the spirit of the new rule.
the idea was clubs with big caps can take on a player and get rewarded with a pick
Flattening out a contract to something fairly average + banking a top 10 pick + being from the reigning premier.

undermines the draft as an equalisation measure imo.
I am sure the AFL will come down and modify the rules and I think its probably against the intent of cap dumps. But, if its nor breaking any rules so be it. well played by the Cats. Play with the premiers would be a great incentive, don't blame Bowes, the cats and by the same rules anyone else can use. Do some of them need looking at? Probably but as long at it fits all the guidelines well there is nothing to complain about

I guess my question is what are the rules?

From all ive seen it's around taking on the contract (I'd argue this isn't the contract, he's getting a new one) & teams with cap space getting a leg up in the draft.

AFL still tick all trades off. So does this get ticked off? That remains to be seen. Very curious to see if pick 7 makes it to Geelong.
And just how keen on Bowes they were.

Was wondering how that would go. It's a bit tricky because of how the thing usually plays out – contract broken and paid out with the old club, new club pays new contract, difference in salary is off-set against the pay out from the old club.

If Geelong pays 4x400k, then theoretically Gold Coast is still on the hook for the other 2x400k in the first two years. Sounds like creative accounting for sure.

Also funny that it's Ned Guy. He'd certainly know a thing or two about salary caps.

Hopefully GC don't still have to pay part of Bowes' salary, that'd be insult to injury and the cats would be getting away with highway robbery.

Gold Coast still paying part of it would explain how they get to "smooth it out" over 4 years.

Bowes gets 800k in year 1 and year 2, half from GC half from Geelong, then 400k for year 3 and year 4.

Dodoro said 'monitored'. What does that mean?

Mackie said 'we've been speaking to his manager' throughout the year.

Grey, eth-dog. The explanation is in the grey.
You've said that Geelong are the only team to have offered him game time. The fact that we met with him twice in the five days prior to him nominating, have been looking at him for 2 years, suggests the fact that you'r off base.

Not sure on the rules exactly, but was widely been reported before all this went down it was allowed so well played Geelong.

If something like thats the case well, its not really an issue outside what the Suns and Cats are willing to accept. I might ask why the Suns need to give pick 7 in that case but so be it

Looks like its heading towards as long as there's shitloads of player movement and new articles on the internet you can do whatever you want.

Once a team destroys their list during trade week they'll look at some limits.

Should've taken our first rounder in 2020. Heh.
didn't we offer them 10 & F1 (13) for Dunkley and 13 back or something like that.
10 probably could have been used to pry Collingwood's F1 over plus change (that's a pick pre-Darcy) as part of the Treloar deal.
And they likely could have move the F1 into this year.

Timing was not the best for them, but they could have still somehow used the picks.

Answer is the gift they got in 2019 was overkill and they can be flippant with the picks
GCS got Rowell, Davies and Jeffrey for free
Pick 22 in 2019 (which they traded up for Flanders)
Pick 11 in 2020 (which they traded back to 27, losing 600pts)
Pick 19 in 2021 (which they gave away with Brodie) for a pick I think went on Berry.
Flippancy, whether it's with picks, players, salary cap or proper support resources, is why they're in this hole and why they'll stay there.

Got a sauce for the pay-out thing?

The CBA/AFL rules

Like in the sense that it’s the only way it could work and is underlined somewhat by the Treloar mess the other year.
The only way one club paying salary at another could work, but Bowes and GC can agree to waive his contract can't they?

Could a second Geelong team work ?
Nah, would never get traction down there.
Any footy supporters are either Cats fans or already have another team, aren't alot of neutrals.

Besides, there is only about 250k people. If they are worried about the financial viability for one team in Tassie, they would have conniptions at the thought of a second team in Geelong.

Don't worry about a second Geelong team, just fix the rules up so the top teams don't benefit all the time.
