Misconception.

Richmond played in 3 consecutive finals series in 2013 (5th), 2014 (8th), 2015 (5th) without winning a single final. When they did win a final in 2017, they went all the way. And won two more.

I'd say consecutive years of competitiveness rather is the experience you need to gear you up for the big run.

I think Carlton overachieved a bit this year. They had a good run of games against lower teams or teams out of form. They played Collingwood at their worst this year. They should still make the 8 next year but don't think they're top 4 material.
