because Hawthorn.

Lordy I love the fact that their coach himself buys into the supporter Hawthorn exceptionalism mindset. Just wow. A list widely expected to finish last is more or less a premiership list already. Amazing
The pride before the fall. It is delicious.

Yep. It'll be great watching them tear each other apart as they fail to win a flag. Well.. those that are still around.

Remember when someone here derided their list as being the worst in the league, right around 2012? Can't remember what happened after that. Maybe Jade does? ;)

The blind arrogance of the guy…

Will be harder to win flags after the Hawkes get injected with massive draft penalties for bringing the game into disrepute

Every year for the past 5 years, you blokes have been saying we'll finish last. It's always the Bombers fans leading the charge on the Main Board "wooden spoon prediction" threads.

Admittedly, things haven't been great, but the only time we've finished in the bottom 4 was our 15th position in the Covid write-off year of 2020 when the AFL shafted us with the worst fixture that any side has ever been dealt. (Not just shunted around 3 or 4 different hubs, but nearly every game the opposition had 3,4,5 more rest days than us.)

LOL @ the descriptions of "exceptionalism mindset" and "hubris". Surprising you couldn't fit the word "smug" in there somewhere. :)

There is nothing wrong with our coach instilling some hope and positivity about our list and the club's direction during pre-season training. Mitchell's message is for his players and for Hawthorn fans. Why shouldn't he be buoyant about the future and talk it up? Nobody else will. Nuthin' but the same old worthless, "doom and gloom" tripe from the narky campaigners in the AFL media who seem to take the same delight as all you lot in dancing on Hawthorn's grave.

So 2023 appears to be just like 2022 and 2021 and 2020... with everyone tipping Hawthorn to finish 17th or 18th
Maybe this will be the year when the soothsayers of doom are finally correct... Or maybe not...

Either way, I still love our coach and all the changes he's made since we gave Clarko the arse. He is just what we needed. Not fazed in the slightest that we traded O'Meara & Mitchell and opened things up for our young midfielders to step in and develop. Maybe some short term pain for long term gain. If Clarko was still our coach, he would've given Mitchell & O'Meara 2 year contract extensions and convinced Shiels and McEvoy to play another season. His reluctance to commit to a full rebuild 5 years ago is the reason why Mitchell is doing it now.
