Watched the Suns-Roos game in Darwin and I'm convinced a Darwin team is the way to go.
I'd love to see teams from both Darwin and Tassie, but there are economic realities. I don't see how clubs in either of those places can be sustainable. They certainly won't have the membership numbers. The social imperative for both places is clear, but the financial case as its basis doesn't stack up.

knowing nothing of the state, but I imagine a joint Darwin/Alice venture team would get good m'ship buy in.
issue is distance. twice as far as the distance between adel and melb.

perhaps a GWS style setup where they play 2-3 in Alice, rest in Darwin

"AFL plan to drag this out until the season starts and most people forget, meanwhile they are getting together for 4 days of nothing to pretend they give a shit"

How the article really read before editors intervention

For another thread but I think Tassie will be quite viable; already an AFL state, lots of locals will pick up a 2nd membership to be able to see live games every week or two, and the state government will tip in some cash.

It just probably redirects some of the government cash going to Hawthorn and North at the moment.

Biggest issue will be weather, won't it? Season starts and to a lesser extent ends in high temp and high humidity.

There was the game Port v Saints in Cairns last season (2022) in late April that was almost cruel to watch such was the humidity on a 30 odd degree day. That'd be the norm in Darwin for a portion of the season.

Home ground advantage

Forget the financial realities.

How does a Darwin team even function. The climate is too different to everywhere else.

you'd play our home games be gween the 1st of june and the 31st of July and have then based further south for all other games.

Twilight at Marrara was a sensational atmosphere. They set up big evaporative fans on the bench and you could schedule the team on a road trip style fixture, lessen the travel expenses and work around the weather as best you can. Teams that travel there could be given extended breaks.

20 teams and a rolling fixture where everyone plays each other once, with an extended finals setup.

Get big $ from a corporate for naming rights. Would be good for NT tourism. The $ you don't bring to the game from membership you make up for in eyes on TV sets.

Probably sounds a bit crazy but I’d put another team in Geelong before I try the NT. I can’t see a bunch of young fellas wanting to move up there to play AFL footy and the weather does not suit.

The humidity is oppressive. A loaf of bread can go mouldy overnight and you can’t get things to dry. You’ll get so sweaty walking to your front gate that you will need to back inside to another shower.

I mean, it is a nice idea but is it feasible?

I can't see anybody wanting to live in Geelong

Night games in Alice over the winter months would be freezing! Always dry weather footy!!
No worse than the MCG in July :thumbsu:
I do know a bit about Alice. Worked there for 12 months :)

Noice! I have driven between Melbourne and Darwin 6 times. Only one return trip in Winter though. I loved putting my hand in the soil to feel how cold it was just under the surface.

Instead of fireworks, they should just turn the lights off and let everyone gaze at the stars for 10 min.
