Just looking at their form and the form of the others in it.

They are missing players, they are defending well, they score easily, they play a style that is finals worthy.
They will finish 5th most likely and get whatever team stumbles into finals.

They're no guarantee that they'll make the finals yet. The Suns on the Gold Coast next week won't be a pushover. They could then have to beat the Giants in the last round to make it. It could be a repeat of last year!

Wonder how long it will take to reach the level of intensity shown by Carl/Melb last night? Another two pre-seasons to get the fitness required?

We're 2-0 against them this season.

i know a lot has been made of hawthorn's recent performances and where we are in our rebuild vs theirs but I think it's important to remember that we've been the bottom side that takes a couple of scalps when the season's over, multiple times, and here we still are. so idk if it's really worth worrying about yet.

Their season has been over since r2
When everyone was saying they’re the worse team in a long time and they were tanking

I'm trying to work out what nickname best sums up his spectacular ability to waste available talent.
Luke Essington Bevan esquire.

The difference is a clear template for what they are trying to do and recruiting to match.

When Hawthorn has played well this season it has brought pressure and run to the game that is blowing up the best teams. They almost just blew themselves up doing it.

It's never clear to me what it is we are trying to do.

Okay without going back over old ground yes it has been hard to work out what we are doing and yes it seems the Hawks do have a plan that matches the recruiting with Mitchell. The only thing I will say it is hard to know exactly what Scott is planning given he came on board too late last year to have any influence on the list.
Yes Mitchell tried to off load players in year 1 when he took over but there where not bites. However he still played them. Mitchell played 22 games and O'Meara played 21 games in 2022. It is not like he parked them on the bench. It may be a clear plan but they still have to get it right and they have a bit more of a winning culture compared to us.
So yes it is still to be seen what direction we will go but this year with Scott has not been that far different to Mitchell in his first year as far as playing senior players that he did not think where long term.
Not saying Scott will go in a way we will understand but so far he has had limited chances to do so and he has been playing some young blokes who are not ready. I doubt we will know next year exactly which way we are going either due to the limited list spots we have this year.

chip it around until someone gets bored and bombs it at an outnumbered tall, duh

Point taken.

Whereas they base their game style and recruiting on fundamentals of the game, the hard ball and running power, we are caught in an awkward middle ground driven primarily by trying to cover up the reality that we never addressed the fundamentals.

I believe Hawthorn 2023 has beaten up good teams in the same way that the pre-2016 Giants did before that list arrived (I think 16 was the Giants' first finals appearance).

I've hardly ever looked at one of our performances and thought that we took it to a quality opponent moreso than the quirks of the draw enabling us to engage in the circle work in which we have excelled.

There was a stat floating around last year, or earlier this year, that we routinely feature in the lowest pressure matches. That shambles at the Gabba last year was the prime example.

We have played a few good games against the Pies in the last 2 years. That's about it as far as I'm concerned.

The Melbourne game we played in Adelaide was nothing like the pressure last night, for example. So I'm not inclined to place much weight in our victory earlier this year.

Yes, this may be Brunoland but at the end of the day finals is basically the only time you can guarantee that an opponent is at 100% of what it is capable in any given year. We are all familiar enough with our finals record.

Sleepy Bevo?

Low energy Bevo?

He may just have to make some hard calls before he loses the authority to do it.

If he does we will almost certainly reap the reward.
