Horne-Francis is such an interesting footballer.

His game is just singular maximum exertion efforts that are as violently explosive as you are ever likely to see but apart from that he barely jogs from contest to contest, most of the time he walks and positions himself to go absolutely hell for leather again.

Rinse repeat.

He was centimetres away from ripping the arse out of that game and winning it for them single handedly but it didn’t quite sit for him tonight.

The Messi way - walk around the pitch taking in the machinations of the game before inserting himself into dangerous positions.

Such is life for the one called, The Horny One.

Messi is not a violent, power athlete though. It’s the Dangerfield/Jeremy Cameron/Buddy leg drive straight into the contest mixed with sitting outside it, stalking it and waiting like Hird uses to do in his pomp.

The amount of times he screamed in and then out of the contest and the ball just evaded him or the other power players chained it out to the left instead of right was downright scary.

It’s not a big game on the stats sheet but it’s a big game in terms of him imposing himself.

I think the only violent power athlete in soccer is Haaland to be fair.

Why didn’t Port bring this abysmal nonsense against us? Pricks. This is one of the most underwhelming performances of any team this season.
Because we brought the crap and allowed them to do what they wanted through the middle. It was more us not turning up .

A bit of that for sure but they were ‘on’ against us - dynamic, incisive and everything they did came off. Yes, we allowed it but Port were about 500% more switched on than they were against Adelaide. Pricks 😁

Port are a side with a history of doing it . If you allow them to play their game they get on a roll and gain confidence. It can go on for a few games until someone smacks them back into reality.
Rozee slayed us . Last night he came back and was ineffective.
Crows have found some form. If we played the same way we did against the Crows then the Port game looks different in my opinion.

They were also absolutely on against us. Rozee and Horne Francis in particular both had probably their top five games in their careers that day.

We what the bed no doubt but they were playing better.
Well Rozee was for sure but it was our worst pressure and defensive effort this year. My view is that is what allowed them to spank us the way they did. Since then Rozee has been injured and it is typical Port . They have an element of flat track bully in their makeup.
Allow them to do what they want and they will look a million dollars.
They are a side with enough talent to really burn you if you do not bring an A game .

Is Zak Butters down on last year or am I seeing things? Every possession is u turning back into traffic causing issues for team mates getting his disposal

Also, Charlie Dixon is a liability for Port. Nonfactor when the ball hits the deck

Butter is like Bolton, fundamentally a player who needs a game and contest set up for him.

He's probably just overrated.

Port were on top everywhere but the scoreboard in first half, i kept thinking the dam walls were about to break and crows would wilt under the port pressure...but after so many wasted opportunities if felt like Port dropped their bundle and Adelaide controlled the 2nd half.
This is a pretty decent summary of how crows stayed in the game early, unfortunately for us we probably dont have the personnel to do what crows did (a number of creative small forwards and key forwards that can take contested marks up the ground)

Didnt watch the match but fascinating stats from the Showdown.

Port dominate clearance and inside 50s. Adelaide have much more of the ball.

Port has more scores. Adelaide much better use of the ball.

Seems like Adelaide wins in the most un-Adelaide way.

I mustve been watching a different game, I thought butters and JHF were the only guys who could turn the game for port, but because they had such little support it felt like they tried to do too much and kept running themselves into trouble.

Yeah the clearance and inside 50 domination wasnt much different to our game, especially in first half. But adelaide were able to burn them on transition from defence to attack because they had guys who could take a mark on the wings. When port switched to one on one we couldnt get out of our defensive 50 because no one could take a mark.

Port have one of the worst small defender groups in the comp, both ade and pies small forwards tore them up on turnover ball.

most of ports inside 50s were dump kicks to an unfavoured contest, like we do but worse.

they also applied basically negative pressure at the best of times.

also very inaccurate kicking

Against us, when Port controlled play in the 2nd quarter they hit the scoreboard heavily and all of a sudden they became a team of alpha dogs it seemed. Last night they couldn't kick a goal to save themselves which seemed to knock their overall confidence around as a team and let the Crows maintain a buffer.

The Rozee decision was clearly stupid, I thought all week he'd be a late withdrawal but playing him meant they were effectively a man down in the midfield.

They also missed Aliir more than I think even they realised. If Aliir plays I doubt Fogarty gets those first 2 goals, and the game could've been very different.

We were letting Port waltz it out the front of centre bounces with no pressure. Once they got some confidence up due to some outrageous luck - I think it was a handball that bounced off Setterfield's back straight in to Rozzee hands for a goal on the run from ~45m - they were rolling.

They've always been able to flat-track bully teams under Hinkley and we let them do it.

They made the most of their luck and opportunities against us, they didn't against Adelaide. Rozee wouldn't have been able to goal from 45m on the run last night as he couldn't run and could barely kick.

Agree they're flat track bullies, which is why they generally go nowhere in September. The jungle drums will start beating this week for Ken's head, nothing surer.

Yeah, JHF/Butters were everywhere and Rozee should never have played.

I picked Crows because I thought Rozee was a massive risk and Alir/P Pepper out too.

Notwithstanding, Port were atrocious kicking for goal.

There were several instances during the game I thought to myself, “this Butters fella is better than I thought the way he reads the play off hands and wheels through traffic like the Roadrunner. However, I agree that if you can put some work into him around stoppages you can nullify his influence if not his getting hold of the Sherrin.

I think in first half their pressure was pretty high, i remember looking at stats midway through 2nd and they had heaps of inside 50 tackles to 0 by crows but by end of game it was 12 each.
The inside 50 count in general was more than double at half time i believe, crows kicked 5 goals from like 11 inside 50s in first quarter!
Really felt like Port gave up once plan A didnt bear any fruit.
