Similar to Glenn Maxwell, who has James Brayshaw to blame for the Big Show nickname becoming well known which so clearly affected precipitations of Maxwell, I'm pretty uncomfortable with this Wizard nickname business. I don't know or really care to know the who, what, when, hows of the nickname, but his name is nick watson and I don't think there's any reason for commentators, media figures as well as players, coaches and fans to call him anything other, besides I guess Watto.

I dunno, we talk about duty of care a lot, what does calling him by this wizard name do apart from basically set the kid up for some personalized abuse? he's already gonna receive additional pressure due to his draft pick and height, then there's a nickname which, in reality, is just gonna make some people think the kid is an arrogant dickhead and treat him as such, regardless of the actual character of the kid.

i guess i just hate this nickname business as a whole

Build him up to tear him down. It’s the Australian way.

But Deadset, surely Simpson plays him in the backline. More than capable down there, and allow him to find his feet at afl level. Doing him no favors playing in on ball in that side.
Simpson is part of the problem. Should've gone/been nudged a few seasons back.

He’s going soon, the idea is that he’ll coach them through the first few years of the rebuild to take a bit of pressure off the incoming coach

Might as well saddle the premiership coach with all the ground zero rebuild baggage instead of burning a new coach with two years of it.

Meanwhile hopefully Clarko destroyed the Hawkes list enough that Mitchell fails.

Or Mitchell just fails cos he's no good.

It's not BS at all. Ginnivan looks for the high contact. The rule is that ducking does not get you a high free kick. Shouldn't be rewarded.
I agree. With him it’s sometimes ducking but more often sagging at the knees

My issue is not with the frees Ginnivan doesn’t get.. I love that and think most of the calls are correct under the new rules. However it annoys me massively that so many others are still getting frees when they clearly drop to initiate contact.

It was a good rule change and umps should stick with it.

They just need to stop paying it to the other 80% too.

Which would be fine, but they havnt so until they consistently enforce it, it would be good to not have the targeted approach on an individual.
It happened with Walla and it feels horrible to be on a different set of rules to the rest of the field.

I'd just like competitive fairness, but people can't help themselves to be ok with ****ing over an opposition or disliked player. it is very hard to have a rational football discussion when it relates to non essendon things. Which is very frustrating but I should expect it.

After the 5 goals on Anzac Day game I hate him forever and ever.

Am I missing something with the Hawks?
So many media pundits go out of their way to talk up their progress and say things like they already have the bones of a good team/game plan. I just dont see it, the list is bog average bar a few guys like Day and Moore.
And Mitchells game plan is straight out of the downhill skier book. We've been there, it pulls the wool over your eyes as a fan thinking "oh we can score so just need to tighten up our defense" well from experience that never happens if you dont teach a young group to be accountable from an early point.

Lots of ex-Hawthorn guys in the media desperate to talk up Mitchell as some kind of super coach it seems to me. A few people on this board who are in love with it too.

Front running football like they play looks great when it works and is easy to coach since players all mostly love running offensively, but doesn't hold up in finals (as Essendon supporters should know very well). Sydney has such an effective slingshot game because they first had the strong defensive mindset to build it upon. Collingwood coming out of the dour Buckley era did exactly the same thing. Added some great offensive runners like Daicos off half-back to a side that was defensively sound and Premiership.

Im just surprised even someone like RoCo keeps talking their chances up at the beginning of each season.
Although I think he generally takes the longest to jump off an old champion team (similarly with tiges he doesnt write them off). But its been 8 years since the hawks were relevant!

Hawks were a bit ahead of themselves from the wins they got last year against the best sides: Port, Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, Brisbane, St Kilda. Heck if we did that well I'd be saying we'd be a shoe in for top 8 this year.

Will Day is a massive out. They've got a very young team. They're in need of KPD, KPF. Watching that game yesterday vs Geelong, their last quater bomb it long and pray just shows up their inexperience. They'll come good, maybe even scary good.

I’ve been thinking the same for a while now. Can’t see the elite talent there. They’ve missed out at the draft big time as far as the pointy end goes. Thought I’d maybe undersold their ability to find talent outside the box when Lewis began to show something and they found Newcomb in the VFL. Waddle, Hardwick, Moore and Day seem like great talent identification. But they have to play guys like Frost and limited rucks like Reeve (big unit but I’m not seeing It). Their mids bottom out quickly and as you see with Newcomb having little impact this year a lot is left to Worpel who’s a bull but is not a game-breaker. They will have another crack at a top draft prospect this year no doubt and they’d want to stay clear of the Grainger-Barrass and Watson types or they’re in for years in the abyss.

Exactly. There issue is they defend worse than us. Run in front of the footy and lack the skills to play that way.

as with what owen said, the hawks are the medias love child, lots of the current afl media personalities are ex-hawks players/are clearly fans and they want their mate to succeed.
