And if this trade didn't happen Chad Warner would be lining up for the Lions against Sydney this week,

Putting a win down to one player is not how football works and you can't say Brisbane wouldn't have had someone else in his place as Sydney did.

Could've played for either club and it's the first time they meet in a GF.
Not too many other players would have took that contested mark against Sam Taylor. You can’t say that Brisbane definitely would have made it without him either.

You can't say the same passages of play would've happened if he was not on the ground, or that the team wouldn't have done things differently with someone else in their place to be further up at that point in time.

Based on that, the law of likelihood is more in my favor than in yours. :p (p.s you must be fun at parties).

If Daniher had left a year earlier when he wanted to he'd be lining up for Sydney against Brisbane this week.

Assuming all results are the same as since the trade.

At least I wouldn’t be talking about dumb what if scenarios at the party. 😛

Cripps wins, he was very good in games they lost, add in the 3’s where they won….

Not a single person in the footballing world would think Cripps has been THIS good this year. I don’t begrudge him the award but the voting here highlights the blinkers that the umps wear. Joke of an award. Seriously. WTF! Averaging 2 votes per game. Not even remotely that much of a standout.

Is there a reason that umpires don't get to vote on their own each game and instead have to form a consensus? With there now being 4 of them, and them all controlling different areas of the field, why not let them do their own 3-2-1 after each game?
It throws historical voting totals out the window as it would now be possible to get 12 votes in a single game; but it probably gives a better representation overall, and means that potentially one umpire can dictate how the votes are agreed on.

Asking umpires to officiate at the insane tempo of the modern game, with a lot of rules that require on the fly interpretation, whilst running significant distances, is what results in well, this.

I can’t fathom how dominant a forward would have to be to win the medal. The brownlow is really just the ‘most noticeable midfielder’ award now.

Not necessarily the best player by any means.

Consensus voting across 4 umpires is the reason the brand name mids are racking up crazy numbers.

“Who do we all agree was great today?”

Ummm… should I say Cripps, who all my ump mates will allow without argument.. or should I say Curnow because I personally believe forwards matter.. ah screw it, I’ll just say Cripps

They keep going the safe way, and here we are

Xerri had an absolutely outstanding year...couldn't do much more for the position he plays. 44 votes behind the winner lol.

If they're going to persist with the umpires awarding votes there's no reason they couldn't change the approach to how votes are allocated as it's been done multiple times in the past from 1 vote per game originally to 12 votes per game for a couple of years in the 70s (amongst other changes).

Make it the boundary and goal umpires doing the voting and leave the field umps to blow the whistle and bounce the ball…

That said, how are they gonna get through reading out all the votes in 2.5 hours if they have to read more than 3 names per game?

I'm not a big fan of the brownlow, and haven't watched the full count in probably over 15 years at this point; so my answer would be change it from Brownlow Night to AFL awards night.
Instead of the vote reading by round have a night of highlights interspersed with Brownlow presentation, AFLPA presentation, coaches award etc etc including new awards for best defender, best forward (rather than just who's leading the Coleman). As well.as the highlights of the season each award winner gets a quick montage and a victory speech

Not a bad idea. They definitely need to dial down the hype and prestige surrounding such a flawed award. Broadening the focus might be the best way to do that so that it’s not all zeroing in on one accolade.

Weitering played in the same side as Cripps and might’ve taken votes off him (you’d think, right?). He was AA full back yet got ZERO votes. The award is officially a joke.

Have you met a few goal or boundary umpires? Ouch*.
Outcasts and misfits with a need to exert authority over others become field umps, then the twisted rejects end up goal or boundary (depending upon athleticism).

Giving them power over the Brownlow is a dangerous concept.

*excluding umpires at levels below AFL who are salt of the earth selfless champions.
