I hope we never see a fourpeat in the AFL that'd be so boring
I'd probably argue the Hawks threepeat was more boring. unlike the panthers who have lost star players due to salary cap concerns, the hawks really only lost Buddy after 2013 who didn't leave because of money anyway, but because sydney is a better city than melbourne. at least with the panthers there's intrigue about whether they could climb the mountain despite losing star after star (albeit retaining core players too). with the hawks it was fait accompli that they'd walk into the PFs

The challenge for us will be next year simply because we have no home ground due to Penrtih Park being redeveloped.
Two of our home games are round 1 in Vegas and in Brisbane for magic round. We do have home games at Bathurst and Mudgee where we have played a bit. The rest are at Commbank Parramatta so no real fortress games other than Bathurst where we have not lost for ages.
Have lost a heap of stars in the last 4 years but it will be interesting to see how it goes having lost Crighton last year and now Luai who both have had real sync with Cleary. But we do have 4 or 5 really good young blokes and a couple that just missed GF selection this year that have played very well in top grade this year.

Take away free agent compo and then allow clubs to 'buy' picks from other clubs with their cap space. Maybe also lower the cap floor so you don't have to pay 95% of the salary cap in any given year.
I'm still yet to hear a persuasive argument for cap space trading. My fame of reference is the NHL where salary retention is a big deal........but in the NHL cap space is king. If you don't manage the cap well, the team is doomed and there's no easy way out of it other than time. (see: my team, the Vancouver Canucks from 2014 to 2023)

that environment just doesn't exist in the AFL. teams can easily wriggle out of cap problems, if they even face them. Beyond the insane shitty thing the AFL did to the Swans after the Buddy deal, the only team in the last 20 years to really have salary cap problems was, what, Collingwood? And even then, I don't buy it was that bad. It just doesn't become that bad in the modern AFL. Collingwood just realised they wanted to go down a different path, and so forced some players out which was a PR disaster but not particularly difficult trades to do.

the main argument seems to be around people being unhappy that the **** teams have to pay 95% of the cap, but in an environment where the AFL gives every club basically the amount of money required for the cap (and then more money depending on the club), I'm inclined to agree that no club should be paying less than 95%.

I think we need it so that the teams that make Grand Finals and Prelims burn players as a result of their success, which doesn't currently happen in the AFL. cap space trading just seems to be giving clubs yet another tool to help them easily manoeuvre around the salary cap

St Kilda signing Max King to an extra 6 years at around $1million per. Yes Bassat the AFL needs to help your club. Best thing they could do is relocate you to tassie and put all your poor supporters out of their misery. We feel stiffed because we’ve been shit for 20 years, they have been shit for their whole tragic history. Maybe Lindsay Fox should come and help them again!

Probably a silly time to hold a clinic then really.

Thought if you're meant to attend, you should attend. Still pinging or not.
Yeah there’s lots of factors. At the end of the day, if that’s your schedule then you act like a grown up, pace yourself and show up.

Certainly an argument to be made about the family friendly nature of their BnF if they’re letting down the kids the next day though. Someone didn’t think it through.

Also. The players are currently on leave, why are they scheduling clinics at all? Or is it scheduled by their management rather than the club?

Don't know why anyone outside of NSW bothers with rugby league. The NSWRL have shown time and time again the complete disdain they hold for anyone outside of their insular Sydney bubble, even the Knights struggle to get a fair crack.

For ant555 and the other NRL fans here lurking

I get it. Kane is Kane and lets face it NRL is an acquired taste . I love it people who grow up with it love it but in saying that even is Sydney there is a much larger percentage of the population that have limited interest in it compared to Melbourne and interest in the AFL.
If someone who had never watched sport was to ask me which game to watch as far as an entertaining spectacle goes I would say turn on the AFL as the most boring defensive games are way better than a defensive NRL game.
Sundays game was not a great game as such. Panther fans will love it as we won. Rusted on NRL fans like it because it was a tough defensive game but it lacked any sort of highlight to drag an average punter in.
Fact is out of the 4 Grand final wins there has only really been one classic game. Last year. 2021 was a hard defensive grind like this year and 2022 we blew the Eels off the park and lead 28-0 and the game was over . 18-0 at half time. 26-0 with 20 minutes left.
Did see another tweet from an rusted on NRL juorno is Sydney call Kane an irrelevant **** wit and a few other with the usual it was better than the crap dished up in the AFL GF.

This is true and there is distain from inside the NSWRL for Queensland as well. It is just as well the NRL is made up with some Queensland board members and the odd impartial as if it was left to the NSW boys , which has happened in the past , they would be broke and out of business.

I struggle with it. Have watched bits and pieces but it’s just not captivating really. Would rather watch F1, Test Cricket. Can enjoy soccer, NHL or American Football more easily than NFL. NFL = AFLX 😅 basketball and netball I can’t watch at all though so I guess NFL beats that.

Is there a replay of a really good grand final that we should attempt to watch for fairness sake? The 2023 grand final notwithstanding, there are usually better H&A games than grand final anyway, surely?

Generally speaking yes home and away games as a lot of the Grand Finals end up being a defensive arm wrestle of a blow out. Not too many high scoring classics. In all honesty last years would be the only one in the last 10 years. Strom Panthers in 2020 was 26-20 but that was more Strom dominating first half then Panthers coming back and getting close late but never quite being in it.
You probably have to go back to 2013 to find a neck and neck classic with tries being scored back and fourth from both sides. You get some really good finals games but the GF to a neutral of part time punter has a history of not being great.
The fact that the close defensive games are sort of loved is there has been some shocking blow outs or uncompetitive games.

hard to grow up when your own coach infantilises you to defend you, tbh
