I don't mind it being in SA either. They all seem to be having a jolly good time. What I mind is decisions being made about things, seemingly without consultation. AFL will make the decision and do their deals and just announce it. Same as with the free to air decision.
The MCG grand final deal being the ultimate back room joke

Who should the AFL consult? They are a private organisation who make commercial decisions.

It's like asking Coke to "consult" over who they give their delivery contracts to.

Ummm oh I don’t know maybe the clubs/states who make up their corrupt competition and who are the reason they get the privilege of having these options in the first place.

The coke example is nothing alike

Yes, but it also works in our favour too, less travel for us.

So this year it was a GC home game that was shifted to SA, if we can get the next three years to be GWS (instead of going to Sydney), North (instead of going to Tassie) and either GC again or Hawks (again instead of having to go to GC or to Tassie) then it is possibly saving us a fair chunk of travel, especially if we keep doing the whole "two weeks on the road bonding trip" thingo.

Also, managing expectations, if the Tassie side is in the comp by 2026, expect Tassie to get the gather round games for at least the following 4 years - to prop up the market for the new team. So possibly unlikely to really move around the states until 7-10 years from now. Would be great if it did become a genuine annual change of state though, but costs will mean State governments need to chip in.

NRL Magic Round has so far only ever been Brisbane based, and the English Super League magic round (where it started) is the only one I am aware of that genuinely changes cities every year.

Wow wtf, Gill just announced in the Saints Pies pre match that Gather Round will be in Adelaide for the next three seasons, wtaf? I thought the point was to share it around!

Guess his lasting gift is looking after his home state.

They should table it at a Commission meeting. Then move from there, but it seems that the decision has been made on the run.

It would have been equitable if each state body (government, tourist bodies), were approached to put their submission to the Commission Board.

Not unhappy with SA having it for a couple of years, gives them time to build it each year.

How is it less travel for us? We now have 11 games outside WA instead of 10, whereas SA clubs still have 10 games outside SA. Going there doesn't shift any travel away from going to Victoria, NSW, or QLD.

Yeah if they kept it to 22 games it would be fine but this is more travel.

I think in the next 5 years we will see a push towards blocks of away games pretty regularly for us though - it's trending that way as is.

It was so strange hearing them talk about how they were rushing to sign the deal and only had 72 hours to discuss it. Didn't even give any other state the opporutnity to put a bid in.

Isn't the AFL a non-profit organisation that doesn't pay tax?

They need profit to money but they really should be operating in the best interest of their clubs, players and most importantly their supporters.

The main board thread is full of ultra defensive Souf Strayans saying the whole deal is fair just because MCG has the grand final and all the games were "sold out".

Everyone else had their chance last year. I expect the agreement was that if it goes well it will be extended for another few years.

I don’t get the complaints, this isn’t bad for Freo. Sure it’s an extra home game for SA clubs, but its neutral for the rest of us, and if the clubs feel they’re being shafted then collectively they’ll complain and SA clubs will get a slightly tougher draw (like this year, where port have what was unanimously considered one of the toughest draws, and they didn’t even make the finals.

there are plenty of ways to even things up if needed.

Farcical decision that defeats the whole purpose of the round in the first place.

Lock in our annual 3pm Friday arvo start against a low-drawing interstate side. Maybe next year they can send us to Ceduna instead.
If it was in WA I'd love it just for our selfish reasons but thinking about it objectively I'd still think it was stupid.

If i'm a Coke shareholder i'd be pretty pissed off if they handed out delivery contracts to whoever is in front of them without seeing if they could get a better deal somewhere else.
