Much as I am enjoying the pure joyous schadenfreude of West Coasts implosion I can't help thinking that a repeat of seasons 2020 or 2021 would have been better long term for really keeping them down the mire for an extended period.

They performed well enough those years to allow the magical thinkers to prevail over the practical when it came to management decisions about their obviously cooked list. One more year of recontracted zimmerframe aged stars and only one mid first round pick would have been chefskiss.gif.

Part of me worries being so bad will give them a lot of draft and salary cap chips to play with.
They've timed it well given the talk is really amping up around trading salary cap. They might yet build themselves a list full of first round draft picks much quicker than they could've a couple of years ago.

I’m 100% certain there is a 6month payout clause for all other team coaches in the event of a sacking. That’s well known by now.
What’s not clear is if it doesn’t apply to WCE and freo. BeinPurplenGreen might know it was mentioned by him here yesterday
Correct, the 6 month / $500k soft cap max hit rule only applies to clubs whose licence is held by the AFL.
As Wet Toast and Walyalup are the only two clubs who have licences not held by the AFL (thanks old dudes at WAFC) we have to include the full payout within the $7m soft cap, or pay the tax.

Toast and Uncle Trevvy Nesobiteo be seeking an exemption soon methinks.
It's an AFL rule that any salary about about $210,000 has to include a settlement of just the six months, that's for all staff by the way, not just senior coaches. Came in at the end of 2019 and it's strictly defined for AFL funded clubs, which would be the ones that have their license held by the AFL.

Yep, and just got renewed as part of the updated soft cap policy earlier this year.

So basically you are saying that this sunset clause doesn’t apply to the two WA clubs because their licences are held by the WAFC, not the AFL?
Are there any other clubs who the AFL don’t own the licence for?

I must say this is an anomaly in the equalisation rules. If we hypothetically gave JL a 5 year contract, and everything turned to dogshit after one or two years, we would be stuck with him and couldn’t sack him. But the saints or the dogs could in a similar situation. Paying massive soft cap tax is unfeasible for a club like freo and even hard for the WCE despite all the cash they have. Any money that exceeds the soft cap comes out of the next years spend too so it’s often prohibitively expensive which is why very few clubs exceed it.

It isn't really a sunset clause, it was pushed hard by the coaches association because they wanted longer terms for coaching contracts to be less of a risk in soft cap terms so that clubs would be more willing to do 4 and 5 year deals, or 3 year extensions.

Which actually then probably means it is a "sunset clause", in the sense that it allows highly paid long term contracted coaches to go riding off into the sunset with saddlebags stuffed full of cash, while not crippling the soft cap of their former club. Except for Toast and Freo, who are farked.

I believe a PP thread has been posted on their board 🤣
A PP thread? Is that like the Donald's little video tape from Russia?

Oh wait, wrong PP...

Fox Footy just said his payout would be $1.6 million for the two years left of his contract, and they have enough funds to pay for it.
No question that Toast can afford to pay it, it is the consequences of the hit on the soft cap the next season that are the issue. Toast would need to reduce their spending on other areas of soft cap to be able to get down under the $7.2m in 2024, after paying the tax hit. Noting they are required to spend a big chunk of the $7.2m on things like mental health and player welfare, it basically means one or no assistant coaches, or part time S&C, or no trainers etc etc. Or they only get footy ops staff who are willing to work for near nothing in 2024, and take a back ended 2 or 3 year deal that pays them in 2025/2026.

Oh my tears of mirth are flowing...

Yeah them getting stuck mid-table for a decade or so before entering this phase would have been enjoyable.

Better to be rebuilding now and hitting the 2026-2030 only needing to get finish touch players. Clubs should be looking back at the 2008-2013 drafts and how compromised they were and plan accordingly.

Fremantle will hopefully be in a good spot. Go full Port Adelaide and tell any WA kids that we will bring them back as soon as their 2 years with Tassie are done.

Issue for West Coast is going to be trying to get multiple early picks. I'd definitely be splitting pick 1 providing they get at least a top 5 pick back. I can't see how else they can get more draft capital, the players on their current list hold so little value.

Free Agency is hard, I haven't looked at any upcoming free agents but would a top 15 player in the game go to West Coast if they finish bottom 4 for four years in a row? If it is significant more than Freo are offering maybe but I wonder how much more it would take if they end up as a basket case for a few years. There are limited FAs wanting to go to Perth, if they are a disaster though players may choose to stay put.

Just wrapped up the interview without asking about it.

Cowards.

Bloke has one one point loss to the Bombers and pulls the pin?? 🤣:roflv1:🤣:roflv1:

Seriously though, methinks we just saw the first step in what will see Hardwick become either the next Toast coach or the next Carlton coach.

Actually you heard it first here, Hardwick has been reading this thread, and after the excellent insightful discussion of soft cap hits from coach contracts decided to get out quick before the cushy deals from the AFL end. Amirite??

Hardwick gone…..
Wonder if it’s worth asking about Shai Bolton, heard the connection with Dimma was a major reason he signed on last contract ??
Pitch hit in the midfield, small forward X factor - I would spag me duds if we could get him……delicious…..

I wonder how Hopper and Tarranto are reacting to this....
face crying GIF
