I expected to laugh more but it was actually glim reading. Respect to the West Coast fans who watched that debacle, 95% of the Eagles supporters at my work don't even watch their team anymore.
This is true of the family my sister married in to. Whenever we got together for BBQs her adult sons would be wearing Eagles tracksuits and trash talking the Dockers at every opportunity. They would regularly attend home games and openly profess their love for their team.

Now... we get together and they have mysteriously lost all interest in footy, they no longer attend games and the blue tracksuits are nowhere to be seen. 🤣

We had our regular big family BBQ at their home last Friday night, Eagles vs the Suns and the tv wasn't even on. Weird. The friday night footy is always on, no matter who is playing. But these football diehards pretended to not even know the Eagles were playing. Bahaha!

But, being the ever caring Uncle, I make sure to question them all about their beloved Eagles. Get into the nitty gritty of the squad. The on field results. Just questions. It's immensely pleasing to watch them squirm.

Can someone explain the coach payout arrangements that Freo and the eagles have?
I’ve heard it’s different to the other 16 clubs as the licences are owned by WAFC not the afl, and so if either team sacks a coach it needs to be paid out in full?

Every other club in the AFL has a clause limiting the max payout to 6 months. Is this true?

Never heard that, and it doesn't really make sense anyway.

I believe it’s true but I don’t know the exact reasons why, hence the question.
It’s why the eagles cannot sack Simmo on his 3 year deal without a massive hit to their soft cap and future soft cap over the next 2-3 years.
It used to be like this for all AFL clubs but the AFL added a clause around covid time to coaches contracts that they could be sacked with 6 months pay, to avoid poorer clubs getting themselves in trouble financially by contracting the wrong coach for multiple years

Maybe that's true, but there's no reason that wouldn't apply equally to WA clubs.

But it seems a bit far fetched....the AFL can't just arbitrarily alter contracts to limit rights.

I’m 100% certain there is a 6month payout clause for all other team coaches in the event of a sacking. That’s well known by now.
What’s not clear is if it doesn’t apply to WCE and freo. BeinPurplenGreen might know it was mentioned by him here yesterday

It's an AFL rule that any salary about about $210,000 has to include a settlement of just the six months, that's for all staff by the way, not just senior coaches. Came in at the end of 2019 and it's strictly defined for AFL funded clubs, which would be the ones that have their license held by the AFL.

When we fell in a hole in 2016-17 we still had Fyfe at 25, Walters at 26, Neale at 23. Mundy a spritely 31.

They really have nothing comparable. It’s crazy.

It is a wasteland for them. They will need to free agent an A grader which will put them back in cap terms or trade which will hurt the draft. Otherwise, it is 6-7 years umtil they get to a 8th - 10th type team.

So basically you are saying that this sunset clause doesn’t apply to the two WA clubs because their licences are held by the WAFC, not the AFL?
Are there any other clubs who the AFL don’t own the licence for?

I must say this is an anomaly in the equalisation rules. If we hypothetically gave JL a 5 year contract, and everything turned to dogshit after one or two years, we would be stuck with him and couldn’t sack him. But the saints or the dogs could in a similar situation. Paying massive soft cap tax is unfeasible for a club like freo and even hard for the WCE despite all the cash they have. Any money that exceeds the soft cap comes out of the next years spend too so it’s often prohibitively expensive which is why very few clubs exceed it.

Puts on AFL hat

Why is any of that an AFL problem? Shouldn't clubs be allowed to make their own mistakes and stand on their own feet?

The more independent clubs are far more likely to be financially strong due to their captive markets.

The AFL coaches association thinks the rule is rubbish by the way, allowing boards to buy coaches on big deals and then dump them for half a single year pay - on a whim.

Why did the Hawks pay Clarkson $900k last year?

Not sure where to put this paywalled article... kinda non-Freo, but also Freo...

Also... Clark... that's lovely and all, but not how you're supposed to do it.

Not sure why it's paywalled when it came straight from his medica conference this morning.

He said he feels sorry for them in regards to the injury aspect only, not the shitness aspect.

It's paywalled so they can write an inflammatory headline to fire up the eagles nuffies and then make them unable to view on the article and see the context to the comments (not that they would anyway). Because the west literally exists now to purely get outrage clicks, any semblance of journalism is long gone

That is very callous:laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::laughv1::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:.
But also very loveable.
PMSL.

Eagles get a lot of stick for the TK trade but in reality the picks the gave up were late teens picks. I think they turned into guys like Cooper stephens (16) Georgiades (18) and Jeremy sharp (27) in the end. Something like that.
Not sure swapping Kelly for those 3 would improve their situation much.

Picks in the mid to late teens are very flaky and hit and miss. There is not much elite talent in that phase of the draft but plenty of crabs. People saying eagles should give pick 1 to Melbourne in exchange for 15, 12 and an F1 that’s probably also going to be around 16 are nuts. There’s far far too much risk in that.
For the Harley Reid pick 1, I’d want to be getting two picks in the top 5 and an F1 in the teens. GWS are the only team capable to offer that. I would 100% draft Reid if I was WCE.

There is a massive drop off in talent once you go beyond about pick 9 on the afl draft in most years and late first round picks especially are extremely overvalued by the vast majority of fans.

Seriously, I don't give two hoots about the Yellas. But I do hope that their tenure at the bottom of the ladder is very very long.
An arrogant club, that has ruled the roost forever and a day, and let every one know it.

Their supporters believed that they were always going to be on top of the pile. Now they are the bottom rung of a heaavy ladder.Every one stepping on them to get to the top.
Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.
May their stay at the bottom be as long as my memory.
Some said on my FB the other day when attending a Yellas game, gee it was just like being at a Dockers game. I asked him how many were left at 3/4 time, he half joking said, just me and my so.I told him to get used to it having 20,000, but please don't feel any envy for Fremantle withtheir over 40,000 ever home game.
There will be some cold and miserable seats at Perth stadium for the Yellas games from here in.

I've gotta say the last few weeks really have saved my enjoyment of the season. We've obviously turned our season around completely, but the Eagles and Carlton are in crisis. Richmond have been struggling and Essendon and St Kilda have been brought back to earth. 2023 is turning out to be pretty fun year of footy
