Are you kidding? They make the whole problem go away well before the season starts, avoid the mess of investigating president of one of their golden clubs, avoid a potentially prolonged legal fight (Sayers had engaged lawyers).
This is the equivalent of a plea bargain

These things are always negotiated and stage managed.

Having been there before, a scorned wife can and would do this. Not saying 100% either, only that you cannot know she didn't.

I think it's most likely that Sayers told the AFL that if they can't prove it was him who sent it, given he has denied it, any finding their integrity unit makes public to any other outcome will land them in court for damages to his reputation - but he will resign and step away so they get what they want anyway.
