The problem with the old final 8 system is that the 4v5 games were effectively dead rubbers, with their being minimal incentive to win one.

Can someone help my understanding of the rule regarding general field play throw ups

I have always thought that the umpires were meant to throw the ball up as soon as possible after a stop play

How come they now wait for the rucks to catch up to where the ball is before they throw it up

Bloody annoying OR do I not know the rules?

I think they have to wait for someone to nominate. Although over the years the umpires literally just confirm who it is and get on with it. i.e. “Darcy, English. ”

I thought todays prelim, Cats V Lions, was an ordinary game until the ten minute mark of the third quarter.
Geelong kicked 7 in the second, but all from no Lions pressure and mistakes. A couple from outta the rear end.
But the third quarter, Lions began to run play the corridor. Put Geelong under pressure and it was game on. It became a real prelim.

I think they want rucks contesting to reduce the chance of injury.

I’d say the biggest difference is no Buddy. Now they have a good spread of goalkickers

While their midfield has also exploded into a goal kicking powerhouse of a unit, Grundy is a core part of their chemistry.

Will eat my words though if Darcy Fort comes out with a medal next week and start believing rucks are pretty pointless in most games.
