Can someone help my understanding of the rule regarding general field play throw ups

I have always thought that the umpires were meant to throw the ball up as soon as possible after a stop play

How come they now wait for the rucks to catch up to where the ball is before they throw it up

Bloody annoying OR do I not know the rules?

I think they have to wait for someone to nominate. Although over the years the umpires literally just confirm who it is and get on with it. i.e. “Darcy, English. 👍

I thought todays prelim, Cats V Lions, was an ordinary game until the ten minute mark of the third quarter.
Geelong kicked 7 in the second, but all from no Lions pressure and mistakes. A couple from outta the rear end.
But the third quarter, Lions began to run play the corridor. Put Geelong under pressure and it was game on. It became a real prelim.
I'll swap you mate
Was at Bali airport & stuck between first customs clearance & checking bags in.
Could only listen to radio.
Mmm better than other options
Wanted a Geelong win, mainly 4 mates
Then had Cody Weightman on my plane going home 2 Melbourne on the red eye.
2 things:
1 I thought he would have had the money 4 a better flight
2 I assume he was diving in Bali, possibly he was the instructor

Didn't this grub threaten to sue and blow up about a fake tweet earlier this year or last year about this comparison.

Spat the dummy deluxe.

Then he pulls it out like it is some sort of joke now.

I think they want rucks contesting to reduce the chance of injury.

If Sydney win, you could argue the biggest difference between their 2022 side and 2024 was adding an AA ruck to their midfield.

While their midfield has also exploded into a goal kicking powerhouse of a unit, Grundy is a core part of their chemistry.

Will eat my words though if Darcy Fort comes out with a medal next week and start believing rucks are pretty pointless in most games.

Yea - let’s be honest Brisbane got away with having no ruck against Rhys Stanley.

Brisbane on paper outside of Geelong’s small-medium forwards should be absolutely smashing them otherwise tbh. Not sure how they haven’t won a premiership with this list. It’s why I can see small holes in our list and think we’re a chance - there’s no way Geelong or Port Adelaide should be getting close but here we are.

That and Heeney going from being a good forward mid to one of the best players in the game.
I’d put that down to natural team development, like Young moving from the backline to midfield for us. Haven’t checked all the ins and outs from Sydney’s 2022 GF team to this one, but the biggest one is out: Cooked Buddy, In: AA Ruck Grundy

If Logan McDonald misses through injury, which tall forward playing in their ressies gets the gig?
If only they had a kpp with gf experience

Would be equal parts hilarious and frustrating if he plays one game for the swans and it’s a grand final.

He’s done it for the Dogs already so doesn’t really sting. Would just be flipping hilarious imo.

Wonder which players would take that. Play ressies the entire year but play the gf vs be a regular all year to get your team to the position.

Each to their own, but Heeney is an absolute monster now and he certainly wasn't that in 2022.

Absolutely the ruck needs to be viewed in terms of the midfield unit as a whole.

Ruck taps are one of the trickiest contested possessions to harness, so any meaning distilled from those stats is very loose.

The reason rucks really come into their own at finals time is because of their capacity to shape momentum. Many a final has been defined, or turned, by a powerful ruck bullocking through tight contests and stoppages.

Jackson's role in Melbourne's GF is one of the most recent and stand out examples of momentum coming out of the ruck. Clark Keating another more historical example.
