It's been a while since the AFL had to crack down on a club with draft sanctions and it's arguably the worst time for it to happen to Hawthorn. I think the last one was a trading ban on Sydney.

Definitely but the AFL will do nothing. What Carlton did with Jack Martin was pathetic but if it meant Carlton could finally see some success (ie more $s) the AFL will happily turn a blind eye. The AFL won't want Hawthorn to be on the bottom for too long for the same reason - they'll get away with whatever they want.

We will have to wait and see what plays out tomorrow. Damian Barrett did write on his column the other day that the other clubs are pissed off at hawthorns antics in this draft though so there’s obviously something going on

Hawthorn really are a shady bunch. They have just opened a second spot on their list for tomorrow. They have pick 2 in the MSD and will also now have pick 15 or so.
This Jai Newcombe kid is fancied by a few clubs apparently in the first 5 or so picks but plays for Box Hill Hawks. Hawthorn want him tomorrow, but also want Ned Moyle the ruckman who has been a NAB league standout.
If they take Moyle with pick 2 tomorrow, then Newcombe will be gone by the time every other club makes a pick in the first round, if on a normal 6 or 18 month contract.
So what have they done?
They have sat down with Newcombe sometime after box hill training last week I guess and said - “Jai - we want you. But we also want Ned Moyle. So you need to Nominate on a 3.5 year contract to scare the other clubs off that also want you, and we will get you in round 2 of the draft tomorrow night”

No I’m no ******* expert, but is that not draft tampering to some degree???

Assuming the Hawks sign him up to the long-term contract when they draft him, I don't have a problem with it. It's no different to a player setting a high contract price in the lead up to the Pre-Season Draft, which becomes too rich for some clubs but meets a pre-agreed amount with the club they want to go to.

I'm going. Ticket prices are $72/$54/$35 for Cat 1/2/3. Can pay $27 to be a Bombers member and includes Cat 3 ticket. For the Freo game the next day, the same seats would be $120/$95/$73. Good chance this gets a much larger crowd than our game.

I shouldn't see why not given that there should be very few Richmond and Essendon members there with the restrictions

Yeah, but I have Essendon mates. I think the cheaper prices above are the discounted prices for club members, might still be the full Freo price if not a member. Not sure. But maybe the crowd won't be as big as I was first thinking.

My mate texted me and said it has now changed to only Cat 4/5 which is included with the $27 membership, not Cat 3. He reckons the discounts are about the same as the membership so it's not worth it. It's a bit confusing without the Ticketmaster page being live. Will wait until 3pm to see if it is $72 for Cat 1 as a non-member (and cheaper again for a member), or if that $72 is the member discounted price.

Me and a few mates took out a 1game North Melbourne membership many years back. It was cheaper than GA and came with a free hat. Can’t remember the game but it didn’t involve us. Was at Docklands. James Brayshaw was pres.

Then a few weeks later ANOTHER hat shows up in the mail at home. Didn’t know whether to be impressed with their marketing or staggered at the waste of money. (Granted the caps probably only cost a few bucks from a China sweatshop.)

You can be guaranteed the West Coast media will look at it that way but the game on Saturday is a different experience, so neutral people want to be a part of it. It's like the first game at Optus (AFLW). I think people who are missing watching Freo at home don't realise how much they are missing. At some point it will right itself.
