Firstly just want to say apologies for the seriously long post. Was just meant to be a couple of words on each of the players, but I couldn't help myself...

Now I know this was mostly against a VFL side and our seconds, so I'm trying not to sound too excited, but just some thoughts I had from watching online yesterday:

Tom Powell - has gone up another level. We all can probably see it. But it's almost as though his belief in himself has gone through the roof. Really hoping this translates to a big big year for Tom, as imo, the progression of Powell, Will Phillips and Wardlaw are going to be big factors as to where this team ends up this season and beyond. If he can become A grade, gee...what a bonus that would be for us.

Will Phillips - Not sure I'm seeing what others are, it was a decent game from Will but I still want to see more. Just more dominance, arrogance, strength over the ball, zip in and around the contest. Just more. Maybe I need to re-watch. Maybe I'm being unfair and expecting too much, but given he's not really playable anywhere else, I feel like he could be running out of time. And I've been on his train from day one as someone who wants him to make it.

Charlie Comben - a bit disappointing. Looks more comfortable playing the intercept defender role. Although shouldn't be the creator off half back. There were a couple of times at least where he should've handballed to Daniel. It was so obvious and the exact reason we got Daniel, and yet Comben decides to take it upon himself to distribute. Might be an unpopular opinion, and I've flipped flopped on this numerous times, but given we have Logue, Corr, W. Dawson and Whitlock now, and a gaping hole at CHF, I think he should be moved forward again at some point. But I get there's the argument of it hindering his development and also his susceptibility to injury playing forward.

Eddie Ford - on the cusp, as he has been for what feels like a few seasons now. Love Eddie and his personality, really want to see him do well, but needs to produce more imo.

Good post and i cut it due to being too many to discuss.

I agree 100% with the above. Well played.

Just finished watching the first half, I suppose it is the Pinks that have impressed me the most. Seemed to cover the ground better and have more options available.
Happy to see Ford do well and Duursma started very well. I or we all hear that Goad won't be rushed, but you could suggest he is a better option than Teakle as of now.

Disappointed to see Tucker in the blue side, but and I feel that we should have a very competitive VFL squad in 2025, that is the first step towards having a competitive AFL side.
A bit unfair on Tucker, ppl seem to forget he played every single game last year

Glad someone else said it.

In the last quarter, he had 3 clangers where he kicked the ball directly to the opposition under no pressure.

I like the bloke, but given how stacked we are for good mids, and with Wardlaw to return, I don't see him as best 22. There isn't something that he does, which is better than our other top mids.

This rubbish he’s not playable anywhere else is complete nonsense. Midfielders as a rule of thumb dont like chasing and defensive shit. So most mids resting forward dont apply pressure, Will does and he has good goal sense.

Its made up rubbish.

With George out. Will gets a 3/4 weeks to prove his worth.

Getting Goater back from injury will be big for us at hbf

hopefully forces his way in early in the year
If McDonald can hold the Intraclub form into the season, there will be no need to rush Goater back until he is 100% cherry ripe.

I thought McDonald was dead and buried, but maybe he has a heartbeat?

He was a lot more careful with his kicks instead of the old bang it to no one rinse repeat we are used to.

I hear Brayden George made comment that Clarko has had a massive focus on holding on to the ball and making good decisions, so maybe that is starting to filter through the group.

There were a lot less instances of the hot potato panic ball that we are prone to playing. But let’s see how that holds up when the real heat is applied?

McDonald will look better in a better team and as we keep surrounding the him in the backline with better disposal players. Will do fine as an intercepting mid sized utility until forced out (whenever that may be).

Are we now taking Xerri for granted?

Amazing considering many thought he was cooked only 18 months ago.
He’ll end up being the best ruckman in the league by the end of this season …only until Goad takes that title off of him in 2 years time.

Im a big Hardeman fan, but outside of Daniel, the best half back on the ground was clearly Hopkins. We should be doing anything we can to secure him as an SSP. He looked like a top 20 pick out there with his speed, movement and exquisite ball use.

Hopkins was one of my favorites for the MSD last year, he was genuinely one of the best kicks and decision makers in the Coates league last year, but for whatever recruiters don't value over age players all that much (even if they are dominating).

The thing that I like about him most (outside his kicking skill) is the fact that he is a genuine accumulator, he plays that half back role so well and knows how to find the footy. He links up, provides drive from half back and has genuine football IQ.

He is what we want Miller Bergman to be.

Really hope he gets an extended shot at the VFL this year.

I'm being absolutely mean here - so the best outcome would be for CCJ to have a significant setback before the SSP deadline?

If we desperately wanted a player on our list, then yeah that's the sort of thing you'd be praying for.

Honestly hope nothing happens, it's inevitable that we'll get injuries once the real season starts.
