The Norf stuff (up) was all about Boomer. All the other players... people might have disagreed, maybe, but there wouldn't be any passion in it. You just don't treat your club's champions like that - ever. It absolutely destroys the club from the inside. So many fans see particular players as the face of the club - and he would be that for the Norf fans. So, you manage him differently than anyone else.

It would be like St Kilda axing Nick Riewoldt when he said he wants to play on next year but that wouldn't happen as we aren't cold and heartless like Norf.

Except Riewoldt is a respected club champion who's immensely popular with his teammates. Boomer is a mouthy little runt everyone at the club will be secretly relieved to see the back of. Under those circumstances Norf's behavior becomes easier to swallow.

Similarly, Robert Harvey was treated so well in his last year, both by the fans and the club.
His entire career was celebrated throughout his last year.

Harvey knew when his time was up and jumped before he was pushed though.
Boomer would have kept hanging around at Norf like a bad smell well into his 40s if they didn't axe him.
The only one I really felt sorry for was Winmar, the other 4 decided to leave but that flog Tim Watson told Winmar his services were no longer required which was why he ended up at the Bulldogs for a year.
Thankfully I was overseas in 1999 so I didn't have to witness the horror of seeing Winmar running around in a Dogs jumper.
