North want to sell a home game to the Dockers or Eagles

Every other club gets things to swing it in their favour. SA gets gather round, Vic gets 10 teams in their state so they barely travel, NSW and QLD get their bs academies, etc.
WA is the state with nothing.

Yes its not ideal that it has to be done this way, but thats more on the AFL refusing to do anything for so long, the clubs have to take it into their own hands to find something.
This is just whats come out of it all.

If the AFL wont remove the existing inequities in the comp then more need to be added to even it up somewhat

Ok but even still it shouldn't fall solely upon one club in North to have to facilitate it, that's just messed up.

West Coast were established and had a big following in Bunbury and most countries area before Freo existed.

Freo is just another part of Perth - no direct correlation to any country area. Even the whole "north/ south" thing - I would argue outside of Freo itself, WC have a bigger following in most southern suburbs.
Recall they did a survey once and the suburbs that popped up with the highest percentage of their membership base was Dianella for West Coast, and Canning Vale for Freo. Which loosely is North/South I guess

Absolute basket case
3 flags in 100 years (soon to be 2), all the handouts to keep you afloat, and for what? I agree. Not as if Bob Pratt is coming any time soon. Sydney are a s**tstain on a grand Victorian Competition. You add nothing, take plenty and have had two great players, in history. 2. Bob Skilton and Jamie Lawson. Plugger doesn't count, he was StKilda's greatest ever, not yours. On a list of your greatest ever players, I found Mellican.. That's where you're at. Parker is a North player and Mellican one your greatest according to google, alongside Rod, Bernard the two Frenchman, Florent and Heriot. Scrubber Kelly, Mark Bayes, Nick Smith and Freo's Chadwick Warner. What's it like being further away from the ultimate than North and with peasant lucky Premiership player (carried due to Carlton's shitness) Longmire as coach! Enjoy.

We'll take your cash but that's it. You have embarrassed yourself too many times when it counts, let's hope we don't have to see you for 15-20 years, sweet Caroline!

I wonder if this will affect them retaining their young guns?

I've been saying all this season that in 2.or 3 years North will be strong if they can keep their core of this crop of young players.

If I was one of them I'd be speaking to my manager.

What a ****ing terrible idea.

What a meltdown.

Why not sell it to Geelong? Cats get 11 games at GMHBA, reserve 10000 seats for North fans so there is a bit of atmosphere

The Dogs actually wanted to play in Geelong pre Ballarat but the AFL said no. Geelong and Dogs had a deal worked out that 20k was around a mill i Think. 10-14k was still more than Docklands.

wow, epic.

To keep this club in the league we've now got to skew the competitive balance of the competition and further compromise the fixture.

Playing a few games in non-football areas is one thing, but selling home games to direct competitors is a new low.

Can anyone make a reasonable argument as to why North should remain in the AFL based in Melbourne?

This needs to be considered a 2-year trial to see if there is any love for the Kangaroos in Perth ahead of permanent relocation.

I remember they tried this years ago but the AFL blocked it, saying you can’t sell your home games to a location that already has an AFL team.

Could the AFL have changed their tune in the hunt for money?

Would seem a bit of a dangerous precedent where rich clubs could buy home games.

Except this precedent has happened at least twice before: Melbourne selling a home genre to Brisbane and North selling them to Sydney. And in all cases the buyer was the state government, not the interstate club.

It's silly to talk about the impact to competitive balance when eight teams have to travel interstate every second week, and ten teams don't. Especially when WA are the most disadvantaged in travel burden.

Don't engage them, just a troll

Some of the comments here are genuinely laughable.

Proud of the club for pulling the available levers to increase revenue, whilst thinking outside the box to alleviate travel concerns that plague this league.

For mine, North should be playing 9 games at Marvel Stadium, 1 in Bendigo and 1 in Albury/Wodonga.

Focus on improving grassroots football in those regions, which is still recovering from Covid.

it is the most uneven sports competition in the world. A club selling home games to teams that travel more that 4 x the amount of other teams does not impact how uneven the competition is.

North have made a profit in 12 of the last 13 years. Pretty well done if you ask me. They are chipping away at being self sustainable, and this will help over the next three years.

Clubs that have sold home games in recent years:

North Melbourne
Hawthorn
Melbourne
Gold Coast Suns
St.Kilda
Richmond
Western Bulldogs

But when North do it, its a problem.

Wait until GWS get the tick of approval to play a home game in LA...

In 3 years time couldn't North actually be half decent? They will be spewing if they play 3 games in WA compared to 1 from other Victorian teams.

I guess its all about the $ and viability tho. This doesn't seem a long term solution to anything and will still need to find 2 more games in future.

So every time a north or saints or dogs are struggling financially they should just be allowed to sell games to financially powerful clubs? What a disgrace and compromises the fixture even more. I don’t blame north for doing this but the afl shouldn’t allow it. What’s to stop rich Victorian teams from doing the same when an interstate team is struggling?
Just wrong on all fronts.

if 2 games in WA nets the same as 4 games in tas (as reported) then it's only an improvement on the current sitch. Might even get 2 more home games in Melb in future

The AFL would never allow it for a Vic club. Clear #NONVICBIAS

Maybe North can relocate to WA eventually. Fremantle - south, West Coast - central, North - north...
Long term it would work with WA3 once the population is big enough.
Freo can have South of the River
North can have North of the River
WA3 can have East of the River
And WC can live West of the River.
