Mate, that's 5 years ago. Yep he used to be handy. Now, a huge liability. Absolutely useless in a marking contest. Does nothing but fall over when there is a ground ball. As for "leadership"', enough has been said about the lack thereof. He turns 29 at the end of this month. Whether forward or back, are you playing him ahead of Smith, Greene, Trezise, Clarke, Campbell, Banks, Sonsie, Rioli? Unless he finds his courage, he should not be selected but he probably will. Sorry, I know I'm being harsh. I hope he does return to the 2020 Shorty and I will happily eat some humble pie.
It was just over 4 years ago.
In 2020 we had a defence made up of players who were excellent defenders who were very reliable short kicks but who apart from Houli, lacked the reliability to kick long and accurately out of defence. This made Short’s kicking a big asset. The other players were good enough to cover for Short defensive limitations . Now we have players like Miller, Brown Travis’s and Banks who are not as good defensively but are pretty good kicks. The question is now do we need Shorts kicking or do we need a player with better defensive ability.
Out whole team defence has been rubbish for years.

He was shit last year, but nearly every one was. I think he'll bounce back to a good level this season. He's only 28.

Don't disagree with you but do we need Short's long kicking or do we need a really good small shut down defender with elite defensive skills.

Kaleb Smith can do both and a spot has opened up for him already.
A bit of hopeful projecting but you'd hope he is given a real crack at it. He has a lot of attributes, quick, good runner, good kick, brave.

Second choice would be Mansell. Campbell's name has been mentioned also, but although he could do it as good or maybe better than any other, I think he will be too important up forward. Campbell could be special.

Nah Mansell is locked in up forward. Ralphsmith has apparently been training down back though. Campbell forward half too IMO.

So was Dan Rioli. We need a hard running half back more than another half forward of which we have plenty.

6 forwards, Lynch, 2nd tall, Bauer leaves 3 spots. Campbell, Lalor, resting mid (Ross, Taranto, Smillie). Others who could go through, Green, Clarke, Sonsie, MRJ, Alger.

It's not like Mansell is a star, he has done well enough last season, but much more suited to up the ground. Backs we have a few of untried/developing types, Smith, Trezise, Brown, Banks.

Rioli was much more skilful than Mansell, who won't make it if he's not a pressure forward

Whoever you name for the forward line , MUST BE ABLE TO SCORE goals . We have 1 of the weakest forward lines and just lost Martin, Bolton whom contributed heavily in scoring and assists

Indeed they must. Lynch back will automatically make our forward line function better. He attracts 2 players, his man and a spoiler which will create opportunities for players like Bauer who has shown he is a good contested mark. He is also a straight kick. There will be another tall perhaps one of our new recruits or Fawcett, Grey. We will not be playing a makeshift forward line like last season with a bit of luck. Lefau will be back at some stage and did well.

So there will be opportunities at the feet of the pack so natural roving small forwards should be played. Mansell did well enough on occasions in that role, but his best work was up the ground. Green kicked 3 in one of his few games. MRJ is best when he is roving rather than chasing. Algar looks a natural and is quick.

Rioli was a gun and few are as skilled coming off half back but disagree with Mansell being not good enough.

Pressure forward means nothing to me, I don't believe we need one and I don't believe he is one. All his best work was delivering the ball up high half forward/wing and using his pace and neat skills to set up play. He got on the end of a few and kicked 20 goals, not a bad return.

He has come a long way from the footballer he was at half back when he first came into the side. He was a bog average forward as well until this year, but he is fast and tough and now confident, I think he is wasted up forward. Look at HRS, he was so average for years, all of a sudden he has turned into a good wingman.
