Number 31: Who will wear it...

It is not allocated at present and I find it hard to believe that it will given to a rookie.
So the famous 31 will be rested for at least 2012.
After the performance of the last recipient that is probably a good thing.
Keep it for someone who wants to be at the MFC.

Why are so many people in love with the number 31? Yes Barassi is a champion of the game but don't you remember what he did to our club? Yeah he took off for the money as well. The number means nothing to me and I don't want Jack Viney in it. I'd give Viney number 23 :)

- Leigh Williams wore Number 11 at Norwood - it is vacant but surely he won't get it
- James Magner wore Number 23 at Sandringham - it is vacant, and when we recruit mature aged players we generally give them a high number, but would we entrust Macca's number to a rookie?
- Jai Sheahan wore Number 40 at Geelong Falcons - good luck getting it off Jamar
- Tom Couch wore Number 56 for Collingwood VFL - he might even get a higher number with us! He will have no chance of taking his dad's number 7 off Bennell!

Being worn by Mitch Clark, catch up haha, also doubt a rookie will get 23 personally

The rookies will all be in the 40s and 50s. They have proven nothing yet of course. All potential at this stage. Not even our ND Draft selections got decent numbers which I like. Make them earn their higher numbers with good performances like Evans, Nicho, Blease, Strauss and TMac did.

Seriously who gives a **** what number a player gets?

Giving a rookie a lower number than a drafted player means nothing and if it does they need to get their priorities in order.

Example-

Rookie gets number 19 after being drafted, so he now things he is a better player or more important player than all but 18 players.....give me a break.

A number means nothing, and so it should

I for one, care a lot about what number a player gets.

This was said in one of the number changes article on melbournefc "We have a philosophy that if a player has already achieved AFL football when he comes to the club, he’ll get a lower number."

Jack Watts, Jack Trengrove inherited numbers with rich history in their first seasons. This is because they were such high draft picks, and the club believed they could continue the legacy of said numbers.

Nicholson, Evans, Johnston and Lawrence on the other hand were given higher numbers. This is because they were seen to be more speculative picks. Nicholson and Evans had fantastic years and were rewarded with a lower number. Johnston couldn't crack the Casey seniors and was given the boot. He is the perfect example why we don't give rookies valuable numbers. Lawrence had a good development year and was rightfully retained.

Rookies can develop very well and can eventually crack the senior team, or they could languish at Casey and never get an opportunity. Giving rookies higher numbers is sensible, as they really could go either way.

No, not at all. Many clubs have players with number 40, as with 44 (Bail)

Jumper numbers are often symbolic and hence my interest.

Jumper numbers are overated. It should be enough that you have the honour of representing
the club, what number you carry around is irrelevant.
