What about some of the Dockers from the 90's

Brad Bootsma

Leigh wardell-johnson

there was a player called Wolf (can't remember his christian name) played against the pies at Vic park one day back in the 90's and was going to be a colt figure then never heard of again. Was bald or shaved head i remember.

Thread needs more Michael Werner, Ed Consadine and Benny Doolan. All bombers and swans players. All pretty average. Doolan had cool hair.

Anyone remember Dwayne Armstrong? Ex-gridiron player for the dons. never played seniors but was a beast in the ressies. Think he ended up in the Ammos at Melbourne High?

I actually interviewed Dwayne when working at Hitz FM back in the late 90's

nice guy believes he could have made AFL but got caught up with business interests and didn't have the time

That would be Clinton Wolf and he did play a few more games but injury got him in the end along with another promising dockers ruckman in Clem Michael.

Thought it's time to give this thread a bit of a bump and some exposure again:

Jason Norrish
Greg Madigan
Andrew McGovern

Donald Cockatoo-Collins
David Cockatoo-Collins
Paul Prymke
Andrew Lamprill
Craig Nettlebeck
Craig Smoker

Shannon Gibson
Adam Ansell
Randall Bone
Adrian Cox (remember that hanger he took in the Prelim against Essendon that wasn't paid?)

How about some of the obscure Saints from the 1997 Grand Final team?

Jayson Daniels, 173 games
Steven Sziller, 156 games
Tony Brown, 108 games
David Sierakowski, 103 games
Rod Keogh, 82 games
Jason Heatley, 63 games
Jason Cripps, 60 games
Robert Niel, 44 games
Brett Cook, 43 games

Some of their fringe players from 1997 who missed out on Grand Final selection

Lazar Vidivic
Daniel Healy
Matthew Young
Glen Coghlan
Justin Traianidis
Luke Beveridge
Troy Gray
Brad Campbell
Kristian Bardsley

That was weird team St Kilda had - stars like Robeet Harvey, Nicky Winmar, Peter Everitt, Nathan Burke, Stewart Loewe and Darryl Wakelin. Young guns such as Barry Hall, Aussie Jones, Joel Smith, Matthew Lappin and Maxy Hudghton. Dependable players like Andrew Thompson, Jason Peckett, Jamie Shanahan and Shane Wakelin

And then truckloads of VFL standard players

Considering our list at the time it was a pretty good effort to make the GF. From memory we lost the first 4 games of that year before we went on a winning streak to finish minor premiers. Alves was underrated as a coach, he got the best out of an average list, god knows why we sacked him for Timmy Watson.

What cost us a premiership that year was losing our two best ruckmen Everitt and Vidovic with injury, we had to rely on our 3rd string ruckman Brett Cook for most of the finals. Our star players didn't have great games in the GF either which didn't help but I couldn't blame the umpiring for losing, it was a lot better back then than it is now.

I think your senior players kicked up a fuss and they had him ousted. Classic case of tail wagging the dog. I think they viewed Alves as too airy-fairy and touchy-feely and not tactically astute or hard enough to take them to a flag. (They kind of overlooked his good points, in the process)

Timmy Watson went from reading the weather on the Channel 7 news to coaching St Kilda. One of the great coaching appointments from left field, that was. Whose idea was that? I knew Timmy's days as Saints coach were numbered when a young Hawthorn team came back from 10 goals down to defeat St Kilda out at Waverley in 1999. :D

If you believe Alves he was sacked by St Kilda board members that had it in for him rather than the players. They were looking to sack him in 97 but when they made a GF they had to shelve those plans, when we bombed out in the 98 finals series they took their opportunity to knife him.

I don't know what they were thinking appointing Tim Watson, we went from playing finals to getting the wooden spoon under him. He helped us get some good draft picks though so maybe that was the strategy.

You lost 4 of the first 5 iirc. It's funny because I can actually remember travelling home after Freo defeated St Kilda over here in R5 and the commentators on the radio were really ripping into their poor performance so far that year. They then went on to state that their season (and 1 other team's) was effectively already shot..

I remember once, Alves was being interviewed about the Saints coming up against a highly-rated opponent, when the Saints were battlers (don't know if it was 1997). The interviewer asked if they were concerned about facing their opponent, who had just come off two losses. He replied with something like "Well, we're coming off five losses; they must be terrified of us." I wish coaches said things like that these days.

On the 1997 St Kilda theme, there could probably be an all-obscure team, made up of the best from the 2000 Melbourne and 2002-03 Collingwood grand final sides.

David Honeybunn was always a favorite. Richmond Ruckman. Mid 90s??
I Grgic - Dogs (??) ruckman, I think went elsewhere.
Greg Stafford - Sydney then Richmond. A uncle of mine had $100 on Stafford at $500 fr him to win the brownlow one year. Tore it up early and polled 12 votes or something in the first 5 games, before doing his achillies.

Gordon Fode, St Kilda and then came to hawthorn, not sure if he played for us.
Craig Treleven, handy midfield for Hawthorn, mature recruit from WA, used to rack up the stats pretty well.

Darren Kappler, Leon Higgins, two ex-sydney players who I was actually rapt we picked up. Didn't do a lot for us. Those were in the darktimes between 1994-2001.

Stephen Parsons (Richmond 1974), was reported out of a massive brawl at Essendon in his fifth game (think assault charges were laid and he went to court) never played again

Wes Barrot, brother of Bill, from the same era

He was actually a pretty decent player, especially at Fitzroy. IIRC he polled OK in the Brownlow one year in the late 80s.

Never thought I'd hear the words 'Cloke', 'Collingwood' and 'obscure' in the same sentence again after this year.

There could be an eintire thread dedicated to some of the Freo players from the mid to late 90's - Jamie Merillo, Leigh Wardell-Johnson, Craig Burrows, Quentin Leach, Jay Burton, to name a few.

From my club there were quite a few unknowns who managed to play senior footy during our late 90's finals era - guys like Peter Quill, Darryl Griffin, Christin Macri, Scott Allen, and of course, Sedat Sir.

There was that massive ruckus about Jason Cloke being suspended for a GF wasn't it?

All I remember was that his father (surprise surprise) was being a massive tool trying to say how unfair it was that Jason was being denied a game in the GF.

That's correct, it was a 'big' story at the time (happening in grand final week, it automatically gets blown out of proportion).

The other footnote to Jason Cloke's career was that even when he was drafted as a F/S in 2000, the word was that Travis was the most talented of the Cloke progeny.. the race between Richmond and Collingwood to sign Jason (and Cameron) under the F/S rule was always linked with the chance to draft Travis under the rule in 2004.

I remember Matthew Lokan being in a shit shampoo commercial.

Whatever happened to Tim Fleming of Richmond? Drafted mature age, showed not much, belted someone then gone...

How about Matthew Connell. Played 3 games for WC in 1993, then moved to the Crows and won their 1995 B&F in his first year. Played in both Crow flags then finished up on 99 career games.

Yep, the conspiracy theory for years was that the Pies only took Jason and Cameron to get Travis.

Looks like a good theory in hindsight.
