I don't think football IQ and being a straight-line player are mutually exclusive. Stringer has fantastic tools to be a straight-line player, and with the broken leg in juniors has never really been able to play as a full-time midfielder so we don't know exactly what he could have been like playing as a full-time midfielder, or if he'd still be what he is anyway.

That 'striker' role they talked about a lot a little while back is basically a powerful MID/FWD playing as a straight-line player.

It's not necessarily a negative, it's just whether you have the tools to make it work or not. Perkins takes the game forward and direct, as a half forward that can still be a really powerful skill to bring to the table.

A player like Moore at Hawthorn might be a good comparison, he made the AA side this year averaging; 19d, 5m, 1.4g, 4t, 4 i50s

Perkins was at 15 / 3 / 0.3 / 3.7 / 3.3 this year, but has gone at 0.9 goals in a previous season. So he's got the potential IMO.
If Perkins wants to get to Moore's level he needs to work way harder, Moore is one of the hardest workers in the game, he's seriously good.

I think Perkins right now is content with getting a game, Scott should've dropped him to the VFL early last year to send the message.

In my day we would have eaten the raw egg then run 67km at full pace till we vomited, all the time with the leaders of the club yelling at us to do better. Should have voted for Weston.
And then had 10 pots and a pack of Winfield Reds for recovery.

And we would have had to carry a house brick the whole 67km and if we put it down even for one second we would have had to start again but this time carry a bessa block

Forget the Caddy midfield stuff. He gets a run in the midfield in match sim as it is extra conditioning work and a learning tool for playing high half forward which he will have to do at CHF plus learning some stoppage craft to be a big body at forward half stoppage as we will play two rucks of some description and he will not have to ruck . The extent of his midfield role will be maybe some centre bounce.
People are getting carried away with the midfield discussions as far as Caddy goes.
Can say for a fact that the club have a view he could at least pinch hit as a mid but as you say, don’t think anyone sees it as a full time role.

Smoked or baked? He's really into the Christmas spirit!

From todays HS

El-Hawli - been impressive with his ball use. Pressure and work rate really good for the defensive unit in match sim.

Bryan has stepped up his work rate up and back in the match sim. Has improved his running capacity.

Redman lined up at some center bounces.
I think Redman playing midfield is more about the current midfield numbers more than any permanent situation.

Redman does not defend well enough to fit in a midfield already carrying Parish.

For bursts it could work though I guess. Could be trying g to replicate what the other Scott did with Stewart.
He wont be playing there. It is just a pre season thing. Gives him a bit more running in the match sim and a spot he may play from time to time if needed. Caldwell has not done any match sim yet and a few others are easing back in so they need an extra few to make up the numbers.

I suspect Hawaii may end up being Duursma insurance that we cash in on. I like Duurs, but he's a 2/3 - 3/4 season player.
I mean he only turns 25 halfway through next season.

Not that I disagree, but it's also a bit of a trend recently for clubs to be tapping into their half backs for midfield roles.
There was a stat somewhere that some of the more impressive Supercoach scorers were ex flankers that had been given midfield minutes and flourished.
I think Dawson and Richards were two that had been successfully trialled and then that became their position due to their performance.

So who knows, if he excels at the role maybe it's something we see more of. I'd welcome it, that long kicking and run from a stoppage would be nice.

Were some of these guys midfielders starting their career off half-back though?

I wish I could remember where I read/heard it.

I don't follow them from earlier in junior footy so I'm unsure if it's just taking guys who have had exposure there as juniors and they had just become typecast or it's just a decent run but from memory there was like 8-9 players that has made the leap fairly successfully, I'm pretty sure it was through the SC lens.

I think they said Hinge was one they had earmarked as someone who met the tickboxes they had.

Dawson played mainly forward before he was drafted. Athletic and above average endurance. Good kick. This is a real captain hindsight comment and not a thought I came up with before the draft (or even in the couple of years after the draft) but he was the 190cm flanker we should have picked.

I presume you are talking Ed Richards ? He was mainly a speedy half back for the Chargers but in the back end of his top age year he did get some decent midfield time. His clearance work was solid but it was not a huge sample size. At that stage he was a bit skinny and his inside game was not really developed. Was always a player who had clean hands at ground level and a good kick.

Hinge played half back for SA but also played midfield for Glenelg and in an all stars game before he was picked in the rookie draft. Brisbane used him mainly at half back and some wing. Also a very good left foot kick like Dawson.

The common theme seems to be these guys like to take the game on and make good decisions with the footy and are good kicks. Seems to transfer well into midfield roles.

I seem to remember Dawson being talked up as a potential CHF at some point in his draft year.
