120 years ago today, Carlisle United were formed. In 120 years we’ve spent one year in the top flight, and two weeks at the top of Division One table.

50 years ago today CARLISLE UNITED sat on top of the English First Division table after winning their first two games. :)

In Carlisle's first ever game in the topflight they defeated Chelsea 2-0 away and followed it up with another 2-0 away win midweek against Middlesbrough.

The following Saturday (24th) Carlisle would defeat Tottenham 1-0 at home and remain on top for another three days, but after that they would start to struggle and slide down the table eventually finishing last with 12 wins, 5 draws and 25 losses. Of those 25 losses, 16 of them were by a single goal and only one by three or more goals, so they were competitive for most of the season, but they did they did have two 6 game losing streaks which cost them dearly as they only finished 5pts behind Tottenham and safety. If only some of the 1 goal defeats could have been turned into draws. :(

The other two teams to be relegated at the end of the 1974/75 season were Luton Town and Chelsea.

Sadly, it was also the last time Manchester United were not in the topflight. :(

9 years ago, blows my mind.

I still have no idea how that season actually happened. It was such a perfect storm of all the big clubs being shit at the same time.
