The Clubs are a business
Ban murder, people still kill each other.I would prefer better facilities and cheaper meals. If consenting adults want to play pokies that’s up to them.
People still have gambling problems in WA.
Ban alcohol, people will still drink it.
Ban drugs, people will still take them.
They are not-for-profit and pay no tax.
you obviously haven't lived over east and don't understand how pervasive they are. They are completely different to regular gambling.
And your forgetting the social cost. More bums on the street. More crime etc. If you look at problem gambling stats there are no where near as many problem gamblers in WA compared to VIC/NSW/QLD.
Do yourself a favor and read this. http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/products/publications/aus-gambling-stats/aus-gambling-stats-28th-edn.pdf
page 51. Total gambling in WA is 5 mill and VIC/NSW is 10x that.
Yeah but legalise it and watch the shit hit the fanBan murder, people still kill each other.
So its a good thing to have a highly addictive and life destroying activity subsidising "costs" (i.e. stopping people from paying their fair share of taxes) of other people?
Sounds predatory actually.
Pokies are specifically designed to be addictive to those susceptible to the gambling bug, they bore me after about 5 minutes fortunately.I have lived over east as well as NZ and in Europe. I have seen people gamble all over the world, in lots of different ways.
One thing I noticed is no one forced anybody to do it, it was all about personal choice.
They should stop all the gambling help lines and support services I guess, case closed.I have lived over east as well as NZ and in Europe. I have seen people gamble all over the world, in lots of different ways.

No,
I just believe in personal choice and not banning things that some people enjoy just because some people might abuse it.
Making things illegal does not help the people who need help.
I believe in personal choice ergo that way I don't have to do anything and get to feel superior to the victims of a greedy industry designed to trap the most disadvantaged people in Australia.
In the case of pokies, yes it does. No,

Are they going to sneak out to an underground pokies venue? Make their own machines?
Our Waverley Gardens pokie joint is sad. The amount of shitty things locals do to fill our poke coffers is eye opening.
Pokies are shit
Good on WA for not having them, however that is one rich economy at the moment, maybe one day if things aren't quite as rosy then things would be looked at. Morality isn't a base human need, and it always comes after those basic requirements, not before. Morality is usually a luxury, basically, if you're running an economy. There's trade offs.

WA has never had pokies, regardless of the state of the economy.
More a legislative issue I think. I don't think it's a footy problem.
Sporting clubs are traditional, obvious places for licensed social clubs (ie people meet there, and the proceeds to toward the club)... How do you run a profitable, sustainable licensed venue these days, you put in pokies.
It's not just AFL clubs. The VFL clubs have them, some suburban and country clubs even have them. Every bowls club has them, tennis clubs, yacht clubs, golf clubs, racing clubs, etc etc.
People who talk about the evils of pokies are right HOWEVER before we advocate just flicking the switch we need to understand the impact it'll have. Pokies in most venues subsidise the rest of the business, allow the cheap meals, cheap drinks, playgrounds, low margin totes, dozens of huge screens showing 15 different live sports, etc etc. That stuff brings in people other than the gamblers and this provides a fair bit of employment in the hospitality industry.
Rip out the one profitable revenue stream of any business and it'll shut it's doors immediately or do the slow burn, jack up prices everywhere else until people aren't coming any more.
We pay people quite high wages (which I am all for) and plenty of penalty rates in hospitality, the revenue goes then the jobs go too.
In this sense it's not just the gamblers who are addicted to pokies, it's the economy too. Agree we should be looking to reduce their presence BUT it needs to be done through a proper transition plan which will take many years, so that employment changes etc can be planned and transitioned.
Rant all you like, go have that rant to the girl pouring your beer at the social club.
